This document summarizes information about Polylepis forests found in the Andes Mountains. It discusses the key features of Polylepis trees and the 28 species in the genus. It also describes the fragmented distribution of Polylepis forests, occupying only 1% of their original range above 3500 meters in elevation. Various conservation concerns are outlined, including the ranges of endangered animal species that are restricted to Polylepis forests. Two case studies are summarized that involve restoring Polylepis forests through tree transplants in Argentina and using radio tracking to study the movements of the Giant Conebill bird in fragmented forest patches.
