The village of Polovragi dates back to the 15th century. Archaeological excavations have revealed an old Dacian fortress and cemetery there. Nearby is a mineral spring water source. According to legends, the cave of Polovragi was once home to the Dacian god Zamolxis. It is said he had supernatural powers and used the cave to travel through the mountains. Attempts by greedy adventurers to disturb the cave and find alleged hidden treasures ended in tragic deaths, as the area is believed to be cursed by Zamolxis.
