Poi che la vera ed invisibil luce
N’apparve Chiara in Cristo, ond’or per fede
L’eterna eredità, l’ampia mercede
Fra l’aperte su piaghe a noi traluce,
Qual scorta infida e cieco error ne ‘nduce
A por su l’alta gloriosa sede
De l’alma il senso, che sol ombra vede,
Avendo in terra Dio per guida e duce?
La cui virtù, con l’orma e con l’esempio,
Con la moderna istoria e con l’antica,
Ne chiama e sprona al destroy ed erto calle,
Ma questo laberinto oblique ed empio,
Ch porta sempre in più profonda valle,
Il cieco veder nostro ogni ora intrica.
Since the true and invisible light
appeared clearly in Christ and now, through faith,
our eternal inheritance, his bounteous mercy
shines out at us from his open wounds,
then what ungodly motivation or blind error leads us
to place upon the glorious high throne
of the soul the senses, which can detect only shadows,
since we have God for our guide and master on earth?
His virtue, through his deeds and example,
through the lessons of ancient and modern history,
calls out and urges us onto the true straight path,
but this unholy and perplexing labyrinth,
which leads us into an ever-deeper valley,
confuses our blinded sight at every moment.
