1. Fun Times!
What do you think about this weather we’re having? Before I came here several people warned
me about the terrible Kansas winters and the hot summers. But, so far, it has been right the oppo-
site. It’s almost paradise around here!
I hope you’re taking the time to get out with your family and friends and enjoy some of this beau-
tiful weather. And, don’t forget that as an employee you’re eligible to participate in most of
our FMWR activities. Have you been out the marina yet? We opened for the season on 27 April
and we hosted our annual “Family Fun in the Sun” party on the 5th of May. If you missed it, you
missed a good one. Everyone had fun and there was nothing but rave reviews for the Outdoor
Rec guys and gals that put this one on. It was a great party. Thanks ODR!
But we’ve got more events coming – especially in June – that you can participate in; like the
Victory Week festivities. Pick up a copy of our Summer Guide or check out our website at www.
rileymwr.com and get out there and have some fun!
In the last newsletter I told you that one of my immediate concerns was to ensure open, hon-
est, and frank communication throughout our directorate. Toward that goal, we held a series
of Teammate Town Halls in May. We ended up with 393 of you guys participating. Although it
wasn’t 100%, those are still some pretty good numbers. Thanks for your support and everything
you’re doing to make this a great place to live and work. But, there’s one more thing I need you
to do for me:
Please go on-line to our Teammate Website at www.rileymwr.com/employee and give us some
input on the Town Halls. In particular, I’d like to know what topics you’d like on the agenda and
what you think we can do to improve these meetings. I’d especially would like to know what you
think we can do to put some fun in these things. Oh, and don’t forget to tell us when it be the
most convenient for you (i.e., the day of the week and the time period) as well as the location.
Hmmmm…wanna do the next one at the Marina and throw in a BBQ?
One final thought. You are probably getting tired of hearing all of this talk about safety. But stop
and think about it for a moment. What would it be like for your family if you were seriously injured
or worse? I said it at the Town Hall and I’m going to say it again: There is nothing more important
that your safety. I’ll bet your family thinks the same thing.
Think about it.
Now, go enjoy the summer…Bill

time is furniture.
The Davis Family home caught on fire the evening of Sunday, April
29, 2012. The fire started in a wall socket located in a bedroom.
The fire went up the inside of the wall and into the ceiling. The fire
alarms did not go off because no smoke was seeping in; they only
sounded after the fire broke through the wall. Rebecca is thankful
she was still awake and noticed the glow coming through the
ceiling so the family was able to get out safely.

4. Customer Service
You can’t have great customer service without great internal service. As a reminder, the internal customer is anyone
with whom you work and who may, at any time be dependent on you or your department. Taking care of this inter-
nal customer allows them to do their job, take care of another internal customer or take care of the outside customer.
Much of what is written and taught about regular outside customer service works for internal service as well. We have
to understand our customers. Sometimes we think we know what our customers want, but they really want something
else. In other words, we make assumptions. In order not to make mistakes, we need to get inside our customers
heads and give them what they want versus what we think they want. The easiest way to do this is to ask questions.
How does this apply to the internal customer? When was the last time you asked one another, “Are you happy with DFMWR will be opening the first water spray park on Fort Riley

my efforts on the job?” Or, when was the last time you showed sincere appreciation to one another? Do you know this June. Project is expected to be completed by 30 May.
