This document discusses how open source software is impacted by cloud computing. It notes that for the first time, developers can access computing resources like Amazon EC2 without needing permission from IT departments. This has led to more developers using open source software of their own volition. However, it also notes that too much convenience can be bad if users don't consider security and lock-in issues. The document ultimately questions whether the cloud is good or bad for open source and seeks different perspectives on this issue.
The Open Source Software movement has been one of the most successful examples of collective problem solving, with a broad group of individuals collaborating flexibly to create software that changes lives globally by delivering applications across all aspects of life, including financial services. This document discusses four appeals that advocates can make regarding open source and open standards: appealing to standards, societal good, desired end results, and considering what might happen if certain approaches are or aren't taken. The appeals are meant to highlight opportunities for new activities, unlocking company assets to help society, enabling new processes and growth, and considering both potential positive and negative outcomes.

This document discusses open source contribution in the enterprise. It provides a case study of how one company contributed patches and worked with the open source community to integrate new versions of an automounter over 15 years. Contributing provides benefits like reduced integration effort, more rapid adoption of new versions, and collaboration on problem solving. The document outlines the contribution process and managing issues like code reviews, licenses, documentation, and communication forums when participating in an open source community.
This document discusses how web widgets can enable faster open API integration. It begins with a brief history of APIs and their documentation standards. While APIs make data accessible, widgets make fully functional user interfaces accessible. Widgets allow developers to integrate external services more easily by selecting a pre-built widget, configuring single sign-on, and embedding the widget iframe on their site. This reduces the time spent on initial setup, testing transactions, and ongoing maintenance compared to traditional API integration. The document advocates for standardizing widgets and providing automation tools to further streamline the development process.
This document discusses patents and open source software. It begins with introductions of the presenters and provides an overview of how patents can both conflict and align with open source licenses. The rest of the document covers what a patent is, including specifications, figures, claims, and different types of claims. It then discusses how contributing code to open source under a license can grant patent rights and the various implications for different open source licenses. The document concludes by outlining some patent strategies for open source projects, such as defensive portfolios, protecting differentiators, incentivizing standardization, and licensing programs.

InnerSource is applying open source principles to internal enterprise development by running projects as if they were open source. The document discusses why InnerSource through increased collaboration, transparency, and community can help drive innovation, reduce costs, and attract talent. It outlines principles like culture, communication, transparency, collaboration, community, and meritocracy that are important for successful InnerSourcing based on lessons from open source projects like Apache.
The document discusses open source horror stories and lessons learned from managing open source programs at large companies. It provides tips for creating practices that match open source policies to build trust, conducting rational audits of build processes to address legal and security issues, and establishing fast approval processes for contributor license agreements to avoid barriers. The key takeaway is that companies need coordinated open source programs to help engineers ask for guidance and implement proper processes that enable speed while ensuring better long-term technical and legal outcomes.
This document provides advice on achieving success through social engagement in open source projects. It recommends establishing clear goals and metrics to measure success. A toxic combination of 15 years of low growth, and four decades of high inequality, has left Britain poorer and falling behind its peers. Productivity growth is weak and public investment is low, while wages today are no higher than they were before the financial crisis. Britain needs a new economic strategy to lift itself out of stagnation.
Scotland is in many ways a microcosm of this challenge. It has become a hub for creative industries, is home to several world-class universities and a thriving community of businesses – strengths that need to be harness and leveraged. But it also has high levels of deprivation, with homelessness reaching a record high and nearly half a million people living in very deep poverty last year. Scotland won’t be truly thriving unless it finds ways to ensure that all its inhabitants benefit from growth and investment. This is the central challenge facing policy makers both in Holyrood and Westminster.
What should a new national economic strategy for Scotland include? What would the pursuit of stronger economic growth mean for local, national and UK-wide policy makers? How will economic change affect the jobs we do, the places we live and the businesses we work for? And what are the prospects for cities like Glasgow, and nations like Scotland, in rising to these challenges?

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.
