MEMO To: Database Consultant From: City lail information Director Subject: Establishing a Crime-Tracking Database System It was a pleasure meeting with you last week. I look forward to working with your compamy to have you create a much-needed crime-tracking system. As you requested, our project group has outlined the crime- tracking data needs we anticipate. Our goal is to simplify the process of tracking criminal activity and provide a more efficient mechanism for data analysis and reporting. Please review the data needs outlined below and contact me with any questions. The need of our database include the storage, retrieval, and management of the following: The data mut be able to store information such as name, address, phone number, violent offender status (yes/no), probation status (yesf no), and aliases of criminals. Criminals perform the crimes. Similarly information such as classification (felony, misdemeanor, other), date charged, appeal status (closed, can appeal, in appeal), hearing date, appeal cutoff date (always 60 days after the hearing date). arresting officers (can be more than one officer), crime codes (such as burglary, forgery, assault; hundreds of codes that exist), amount of fine, court fee, amount paid, payment due date, and charge status (pending, guilty, not guilty), etc. of crimes. Also need to be stored is information such as start date, end date, number of violations (such as not reporting to probation officer), and type of sentence (jail period, house arrest, probation) about sentencing, and appeal filing date, appeal hearing date, status (pending, approved, and disapproved) about appeals. Each crime case can be appealed up to three times about appeals. The database also needs to store information such as the first and last names, address, contact information such as phone, emall, and the status of probationary officers. Similarly, information such as name, precinct, badge number, phone contact, status (active, finactive) about police officers need to be stored and managed as well. Officers, especially the crime officers will irvestigate the crimes and bring crime charges based on the crime codes. The persons (criminals) when proven guilty of crimes will serve the sentence and probation officers will be overseeing it. Extra information: A single crime can involve multiple crime charges, such as burglary and assault. Criminals can be assigned multiple sentences. For example, a criminal might be required to serve a jail sentence followed by a period of probation. As a first step toward the design of the requested database, based on the information provided in the memo, do the following: 1) Identify entities, attributes (columns]. primary keys, and relationships. 2) Create an initial database design (E-R model) for the City Jail..
