Arguments Are Support
While being open-minded and playing “the believing game” is a great starting place whenever you're having a discussion, the remainder of the webtext will focus on what Peter Elbow calls “the doubting game.” To filter through all the ideas presented to you and decide what to believe, it's important to turn a skeptical eye to every argument you encounter.
The first step is to understand exactly what makes up an argument. To say that something is true is to make a claim. But to give reasons to believe that it is true is to make an argument. Thus, all arguments consist of at least two parts:
1. Premise: one or more reasons or pieces of evidence to support the claim
2. Conclusion: the claim being supported
Arguments make the process of thinking visible. The logical leap from the premises to the conclusion is known as an inference. Whenever you draw a conclusion based on a piece of information, such as seeing a threateningly dark sky and deciding that there’s a good chance of rain, you’re making an inference. When these inferences are articulated with premises and conclusions, they make an argument.
Recognizing Arguments
Not every piece of text or spoken speech you encounter is necessarily an argument. Unless it has both premises and a conclusion, it’s not an argument.
If no support is offered, it’s not an argument. It might be true. It might be a fact. It might be an opinion. But if there are no reasons to back it up, its not an argument. Consider the following passage:
People say I'm angry. I am. I'm angry that our president started an unnecessary war. I'm upset that our military got away with torturing people. I'm mad that an insurance company sold policies that my government had to cover, and they're still open. I'm upset that companies like Countrywide and Washington Mutual collapsed the housing market. I'm totally disgusted in Congress. 1
This could be the beginning of an argument—maybe the author goes on to support his opinions with reasons and evidence. But as it stands, this piece of text is merely a list of assertions of belief.
Narratives are also not arguments:
I remember being paid $5.75 an hour at my first job as a host at Hobee’s, a brunch restaurant in the East Bay town of Fremont where I grew up. The dismal pay rate felt like a significant amount of money at the time, but then again it was the year 2000, I was living with my parents, and I was only 14. … It’s hard to imagine how my coworkers at Hobee’s were surviving on $5.75 an hour all those years ago, many of them with families to support. 2
The text above is also not an argument. The writer is reflecting upon his memories, and his feelings about his memories, but because he doesn’t make any definitive claim, it’s not an argument.

We previously briefly discussed Article III which discusses the role of the Judicial Branch of government (Links to an external site.). Remember that the Judicial Branch includes lots of courts, for example all of the federal courts are included in this branch, but the highest court in the country is the Supreme Court.
The primary role of this branch is to interpret the Constitution and laws and to determine the constitutionality of laws made by our government. If a law is considered unconstitutional, then that law is struck down and cannot be enforced. The Supreme Court has the final say on the constitutionality of laws, and all lower courts are supposed to adhere to the decisions by the Supreme Court.
I like to think of the Supreme Court as the "defenders of the Constitution," meaning that their ultimate job is to make sure the Constitution is being enforced and respected. However, not everyone agrees with that the Constitution means, so defending it is not easy!

There are different types of laws in the US, with the two biggest categories being federal laws and state laws. Federal laws are made by the federal government and state laws are made by the different state governments. Depending on the type of crime someone has committed, they may be either charged with breaking a federal law or a state law. If someone is accused of breaking a federal law then their case is dealt with in a federal court; if someone is accused of breaking a state law then their case is dealt with in a state court.
As we learned previously, most people are actually imprisoned for breaking state laws than federal laws. However, in this class we are primarily focusing on the federal government so we will only be examining the federal court system (as a shameless plug, I am teaching a face to face class in the fall called State and Local Government-POSCI 16-where we only look at California's government and judicial system and we look at political problems facing the state).

Within the federal judicial system, there are two types of courts: Trial Courts and Courts of Appeals
TRIAL COURTS (also called District Courts)
This is the lowest level of court, meaning, this is where most cases begin. Trial courts are what we typically think of when we think of courts: there is a judge, a jury, evidence is presented, and witnesses are called. This is typically what we see on TV and in movies (usually with someone yelling "I OBJECT!!" at some point).
The goal of the trial courts is to come to a conclusion about a case; meaning, who is right or wrong or who is guilty or not guilty. What is Justice?
When a law enforcement officer pulls you over. What is running through your mind? Are you nervous, confused or are you scared? As you see him approach your car do you immediately put your hands on the steering wheel because you’re afraid to give him the wrong impression? You get a ticket for your brake lights not working. You can prove to the judge your brake lights are fixed and maybe he can rule for you not to get points on your license. However, do you trust the judicial system? After all the cases we here about authorities abusing their power, would you be able to tell me that you still believe in the judicial system? We often hear in the news, that an officer used justified deadly force, but you wonder if it really was. A judge has to be a impartial decision maker in the pursuit of justice, but is he always looking for what’s best for the defendant or society? What did Hobbes think when he talked about justice and the only way for justice to be served was for social unity achieved by establishing a commonwealth ruled by a sovereign to ensure the security of a commonwealth. Yes, establishing security but what about making sure those who have the authority over us are following the same guidelines as to protect the commonwealth and are not overusing their power. The sovereign should be the ruling force behind the contract that a Police officer or Judge has on us and if they are to break their word. I will argue for Hobbes On why our judicial system should have a sovereign.
In the last couple of years, we have seen a lot of controversy with police misconduct from using their firearm and from overstepping their boundary. For example, we’ve have had many incidents in the last years from Eric Gerner death in Staten Island, New York to Officer Jeronimo Yanez in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. It’s hard to pick an incident and discuss even though there is footage of these law enforcement misconduct. Officer Shelby is a law enforcement officer who shot Terence Crutcher. Terence Crutcher was having car trouble in the middle of the street and as officer Shelby arrived she started to question him about his whereabouts and Terence Crutcher got upset because he did nothing to wrong besides his car being in the middle of the street. Multiple Officers are called to the scene for back up. They even had a helicopter, which recorded the incident from the air. As Terence Crutcher decides to walk, back to his car because he feels he is being harassed as he get close to car and reaches into his car. Terence Crutcher is shot by Officer Shelby because she said she felt threaten and believed he was reaching for a gun. There was no gun in Terence Crutcher car and everyone who knew him knew him as a church going family man. Officer Shelby goes to trial and is found not guilty. Hobbes has always believed in avoiding chaos and bloodshed. He wanted a sovereign because he knew people were selfish and didn’t.

Case 1: The Distressed Grandfather
Approximately one year ago, Donald Drake
and his six-year-old grandson, Philip, were walk-
ing down a residential road on their way home
from visiting one of Philip's friends. Philip was
walking on the sidewalk approximately 30 feet
in front of Mr. Drake. Suddenly, a car sped past
Mr. Drake, seemingly went out of control, jumped
the curb, and hit Philip. Mr. Drake ran to Philip's
side, but it was too late. Philip had been killed
instantly. The driver of the car, Mrs. Wilma Small,
was unhurt. Based on skid marks and testimony
from both Mrs. Small and Mr. Drake, the police
investigation following the accident determined
that excessive speed was the cause of the accident.
Mr. Drake said that at the time of the acci-
dent his only concern was for the welfare of his
grandson because he himself was clear of the
danger. Naturally, Mr. Drake suffered a great deal
of mental pain and shock because of seeing his

What is Justice?
When a law enforcement officer pulls you over. What is running through your mind? Are you nervous, confused or are you scared? As you see him approach your car do you immediately put your hands on the steering wheel because you’re afraid to give him the wrong impression? You get a ticket for your brake lights not working. You can prove to the judge your brake lights are fixed and maybe he can rule for you not to get points on your license. However, do you trust the judicial system? After all the cases we here about authorities abusing their power, would you be able to tell me that you still believe in the judicial system? We often hear in the news, that an officer used justified deadly force, but you wonder if it really was. A judge has to be a impartial decision maker in the pursuit of justice, but is he always looking for what’s best for the defendant or society? What did Hobbes think when he talked about justice and the only way for justice to be served was for social unity achieved by establishing a commonwealth ruled by a sovereign to ensure the security of a commonwealth. Yes, establishing security but what about making sure those who have the authority over us are following the same guidelines as to protect the commonwealth and are not overusing their power. The sovereign should be the ruling force behind the contract that a Police officer or Judge has on us and if they are to break their word. I will argue for Hobbes On why our judicial system should have a sovereign.
In the last couple of years, we have seen a lot of controversy with police misconduct from using their firearm and from overstepping their boundary. For example, we’ve have had many incidents in the last years from Eric Gerner death in Staten Island, New York to Officer Jeronimo Yanez in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. It’s hard to pick an incident and discuss even though there is footage of these law enforcement misconduct. Officer Shelby is a law enforcement officer who shot Terence Crutcher. Terence Crutcher was having car trouble in the middle of the street and as officer Shelby arrived she started to question him about his whereabouts and Terence Crutcher got upset because he did nothing to wrong besides his car being in the middle of the street. Multiple Officers are called to the scene for back up. They even had a helicopter, which recorded the incident from the air. As Terence Crutcher decides to walk, back to his car because he feels he is being harassed as he get close to car and reaches into his car. Terence Crutcher is shot by Officer Shelby because she said she felt threaten and believed he was reaching for a gun. There was no gun in Terence Crutcher car and everyone who knew him knew him as a church going family man. Officer Shelby goes to trial and is found not guilty. Hobbes has always believed in avoiding chaos and bloodshed. He wanted a sovereign because he knew people were selfish and didn’t.

Case 1: The Distressed Grandfather
Approximately one year ago, Donald Drake
and his six-year-old grandson, Philip, were walk-
ing down a residential road on their way home
from visiting one of Philip's friends. Philip was
walking on the sidewalk approximately 30 feet
in front of Mr. Drake. Suddenly, a car sped past
Mr. Drake, seemingly went out of control, jumped
the curb, and hit Philip. Mr. Drake ran to Philip's
side, but it was too late. Philip had been killed
instantly. The driver of the car, Mrs. Wilma Small,
was unhurt. Based on skid marks and testimony
from both Mrs. Small and Mr. Drake, the police
investigation following the accident determined
that excessive speed was the cause of the accident.
Mr. Drake said that at the time of the acci-
dent his only concern was for the welfare of his
grandson because he himself was clear of the
danger. Naturally, Mr. Drake suffered a great deal
of mental pain and shock because of seeing his
grandson killed. While being driven home from
the accident, he suffered a heart attack that neces-

The Parker family
The Parker Family Sara is a 72-year-old widowed Caucasian female who lives in a two-bedroom apartment with her 48-year-old daughter, Stephanie, and six cats. Sara and her daughter have lived together for the past 10 years, since Stephanie returned home after a failed relationship and was unable to live independently. Stephanie has a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, and her overall physical health is good. Stephanie has no history of treatment for alcohol or substance abuse; during her teens she drank and smoked marijuana but no longer uses these substances. When she was 16 years old, Stephanie was hospitalized after her first bipolar episode. She had attempted suicide by swallowing a handful of Tylenol® and drinking half a bottle of vodka after her first boyfriend broke up with her. She has been hospitalized three times in the past 4 years when she stopped taking her medications and experienced suicidal ideation. Stephanie’s current medications are Lithium, Paxil®, Abilify®, and Klonopin®. Stephanie recently had a brief hospitalization as a result of depressive symptoms. She attends a mental health drop-in center twice a week to socialize with friends and receives outpatient psychiatric treatment at a local mental health clinic for medication management and weekly therapy. She is maintaining a part-time job at a local supermarket where she bags groceries and is currently being trained to become a cashier. Stephanie currently has active Medicare and receives Social Security Disability (SSD). Sara has recently been hospitalized for depression and has some physical issues. She has documented high blood pressure and hyperthyroidism, she is slightly underweight, and she is displaying signs of dementia. Sara has no history of alcohol or substance abuse. Her current medications are Lexapro® and Zyprexa®. Sara has Medicare and receives Social Security benefits and a small pension. She attends a day treatment program for seniors that is affiliated with a local hospital in her neighborhood. Sara attends the program 3 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and van service is provided free of charge. A telephone call was made to Adult Protective Services (APS) by the senior day treatment social worker when Sara presented with increased confusion, poor attention to daily living skills, and statements made about Stephanie’s behavior. Sara told the social worker at the senior day treatment program that, “My daughter is very argumentative and is throwing all of my things out.” She reported, “We are fighting like cats and dogs; I’m afraid of her and of losing all my stuff.” During the home visit, the APS worker observed that the living room was very cluttered, but that the kitchen was fairly clean, with food in the refrigerator and cabinets. Despite the clutter, all of the doorways, including the front door, had clear egress. The family lives on the first floor of.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
