People who plan the programme should aim to enhance the vocational nature of the Pearson
BTEC qualifications by:

enter work.

• Including employers in the delivery of the programme and, where appropriate, in the
assessment.

Programme Design and Delivery
Pearson BTEC Higher National Qualifications Consist of:
•Specialist Units •Optional Units
• Higher National qualifications’ unit credit value is based on multiples of 5 credits.
• Most units are 15 credits in value.
• Each 15-credit unit approximates to 150 hours of learning time (60 ‘guided’ learning
hours and 90 ‘independent’ learning hours)

• The total credit value of the qualification
• The minimum credit to be achieved at the level of the qualification
• The core units
• The specialist units
• The optional units
• The maximum credit value in units that can be centre commissioned.
When combining units for a Higher National qualification, it is the centre’s responsibility to make
sure that the correct combinations are followed.

If a student enrols for an HNC they would be eligible to gain a
grade for the HNC. If they then Top Up to an HND, the student
is graded for the overall qualification on their HND
performance.
If a student takes an HND from the start, then on successful
completion of the HND they will receive one grade for the
HND achievement only.
