BTECHigher National ImplementationtrainingDeck4 Core Units Programme Design and Delivery Pearson BTEC Higher National Qualifications Consist of: •Specialist Units •Optional Units • Higher National qualifications’ unit credit value is based on multiples of 5 credits. • Most units are 15 credits in value. • Each 15-credit unit approximates to 150 hours of learning time (60 ‘guided’ learning hours and 90 ‘independent’ learning hours) Core Units • Mandatory • Units that All studentwill complete (regardlessof pathway) • Provide the key skills and knowledge that are requiredwithin the overall subject Specialist Units • Mandatory • Units that ALL students (within a pathway) will complete • Provide the key knowledge and skills that provide pathway specificity Optional Units • Units that are available for the centre to add to the qualification • Provide additional opportunity for increased pathway specificity or to enhance transferable skills. 8

BTECHigher National ImplementationtrainingDeck4 • Provide centres with choice, to create unique offers for students and employers • Broaden the range of subjects that may be included within a qualification, creating greater depth or breadth • In some cases, centres may use Specialist Units (from a different pathway) as Optional Units. BTECHigher National ImplementationtrainingDeck4 The programme structures specify: • The total credit value of the qualification • The minimum credit to be achieved at the level of the qualification • The core units • The specialist units • The optional units • The maximum credit value in units that can be centre commissioned. If they then Top Up to an HND, the student is graded for the overall qualification on their HND performance. If a student takes an HND from the start, then on successful completion of the HND they will receive one grade for the HND achievement only.
