5th Lecture of A New Approach to Islamic Economics - course website: bit.ly/IslamicEcon2023 This lecture explains that a market society is built on a network of relationship which centralize the market, and make social relationships peripheral. A market society is required for capitalism to function. To create an Islamic Economy, we must rebuild the social relationships at the heart of an Islamic society, and transform the market relationships into social ones. The lecture slides outline how we might do this.

2. Agenda
Independence / Azadi – Goal or Means
to achieve the Goal.
What should be our Goal?
Do we have a Vision?
Where we went Wrong?
Why are we facing the current Turmoil?
What to Do?
Let’s make a sincere Commitment to
Allah SWT.
3. Independence / AZADI – Goal or Means
For Muslims, Independence is not the
Goal – it is a valuable Means to achieve
extremely Superior Goals.
The Muslims of Un-divided India (sub-
continent) made the demand for a
separate homeland mainly to establish
the Authority of Allah SWT / Shariah in
an independent State without any
interference or fear of Others esp., the
Infidels.
4. Independence / AZADI – Goal or Means
Pakistan came into existence with
great sacrifice of over Half a million
Lives as an Ideological State and not
as a country established on racial,
linguistic or geographic basis.
Pakistan is the second such State (first
was Madinah Munawwarrah), which
has an ideological background / reason
for its establishment.
5. Quaid-e-Azam’s Vision of Pakistan
Outlining the purpose of the creation of
Pakistan, Quaid-i-Azam said in a speech to
the officers of the Defence Service on
October 11, 1947, that the establishment of
Pakistan was only a “means to an end and
not the end in itself. The Idea was that we
should have a state in which we could live
and breathe as free men and which we
could develop according to our own lights
and culture and where principles of Islamic
social justice could find free play.”
6. Quaid-e-Azam’s Vision of Pakistan
Addressing a public meeting in Lahore a
few days later, Quaid described the
circumstances in which Pakistan came
into existence. Consoling those who had
been subjected to inhuman brutalities as a
result “of a deeply laid and well-planned
conspiracy” on the part of the enemies of
Pakistan, he gave them the hope that this
was but a temporary setback. He assured
them that “If we take inspiration and
guidance from the Holy Quran, the final
victory, I once again say, will be ours.”
7. Quaid-e-Azam’s Vision of Pakistan
Quaid advised that everyone “to whom
this message reaches must vow to
himself and be prepared to sacrifice his
all, if necessary, in building up Pakistan
as a bulwark (Castle) of Islam;
Do not be afraid of death;
Save the honour of Pakistan and Islam.”
8. Importance of Pakistan
The ONLY Atomic / Nuclear Power in
the whole Muslim Ummah / States in
the World.
Highly Skilled large pool of Human
Capital / Talent.
Until the 60s, Pakistan was the fastest
growing Economy globally after Japan
& countries like Korea & China learnt
from our Experiences.
9. Importance of Pakistan
Largest Producer of Islamic Scholars
and Huffaz globally – Awarded First
Position in Makkah this year.
Pakistan has been successful by the
Grace & Help of Allah SWT in not being
effected / destructed despite Wars in
the Neighboring Afghanistan by two
World Super Powers .
10. What should be our Goal?
Our Goal should be what our Creator /
Master, Allah SWT has specified for us
in the Holy Quran:
51:56 I have only created Jinns and
men, that they may serve Me.
Surah Az Zariyat (The Winds that Scatter).
11. What should be our Goal?
It is our duty to work towards
introduction and implementation of
a System, which should create a
conducive environment for the
Muslims to serve Allah SWT and to
obey His SWT commands in all
aspects of lives; a System based
on the Holy Quran & the Sunnah of
our Beloved Prophet Mohammad
SallAllahu Alaihi Wassalam (SAW).
12. Islamic Constitution
In an independent Islamic State, the
Constitution should take care of the
following commands of Allah SWT:
13. Islamic Constitution
22:41 (They are) those who, if We
establish them in the land,
establish regular prayer and give
regular charity (Zakat), enjoin the
right and forbid wrong: with Allah
rests the end (and decision) of (all)
affairs.
Surah Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage).
14. Do We Have a VISION?
A Life without a Vision is like a
Journey without a Destination!
We as a Nation and even as
Individuals lack a Clear &
Strong Vision.
15. Where We Went Wrong?
We are Independent physically but
Mentally we are still slaves of:
1. The Western / Un-Islamic Culture via
Education & Media influence.
On the next slide, you would note that
how the British Rulers identified this as
the Key to influence the Muslims of the
Sub-Continent & made sure that even
after they leave, they Rule the Minds of
the Mass Muslim population.
16. Role of Education
Lord Macaulay said the following about India in
1835 in the British Parliament:
"I have traveled across the length and breadth of India and
I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief.
Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral
values, people of such calibre, that I do not think we
would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very
backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural
heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old
and ancient Education system, her culture, for if the
Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good
and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem,
their native self-culture and they will become what we
want them, a truly dominated nation.“
17. Where We Went Wrong?
2. We have become Slaves of our own
Vain Desires; as clearly stated by Allah
SWT in the Holy Quran:
18. Where We Went Wrong?
45:23 Then seest thou such a one as
takes as his god his own vain desire?
Allah has, knowing (him as such), left
him astray, and sealed his hearing and
his heart (and understanding), and put
a cover on his sight. Who, then, will
guide him after Allah (has withdrawn
Guidance)? Will ye not then receive
admonition?
Surah Al-Jathiya (The Kneeling).
19. Where We Went Wrong?
By following our Vain Desires, we have
indulged ourselves in negative activities:
Material Gain / Benefits by any / all
means leading to a very high level of
Corruption in the Society.
Waste of resources esp., Time in
useless activities – Media & Internet /
Chatting, talking & texting on Cell
phones..
20. Where We Went Wrong?
Unfair dealings & injustice – leading to
lack of tolerance, target killing &
snatching etc.
Useless discussions, arguments, back-
biting leading to hatred and anger of
Allah SWT.
Overall, a majority of people don’t
respect Law & indulge in illegitimate
actions including Tax evasion &
breaking all kind of rules.
21. Why are we Facing the Current Turmoil?
As we are disobeying the Creator instead of
being thankful to Him, we are facing the
Turmoil, as clearly stated by Allah SWT in
the Holy Quran:
22. Why are we Facing the Current Turmoil?
16:112 Allah sets forth a Parable: a city
enjoying security and quiet, abundantly
supplied with sustenance from every
place: Yet was it ungrateful for the
favours of Allah. so Allah made it taste of
hunger and terror (in extremes) (closing
in on it) like a garment (from every side),
because of the (evil) which (its people)
wrought.
Surah Al Nahl (The Bee).
23. What To Do?
Each & every individual / the whole
nation must repent to Allah SWT / make
Sincere Tauba.
Make a firm commitment followed by an
Action Plan to change personally and
also influence all those within the
controllable sphere like family / friends
and employees / juniors. Allah SWT
does not change those, who don’t
change themselves:
24. What To Do?
13:11 For each (such person) there are (angels) in
succession, before and behind him: They guard him by
command of Allah. Verily never will Allah change the
condition of a people until they change it themselves
(with their own souls). But when (once) Allah willeth a
people's punishment, there can be no turning it back,
nor will they find, besides Him, any to protect.
Surah Al Rad (The Thunder).
25. What To Do?
Use the Time productively as it is the most
valuable resource provided by Allah SWT
and can’t be recycled / regained once
wasted. Try best to follow Shariah in all
aspects of life and spread the message of
Islam through best Character / dealings.
Whatever your position is, Student,
Employee, Businessmen, self-employed;
make your best / honest efforts and don’t
indulge in unfair means / corrupt practices.
26. What To Do?
Make a habit to help those who are less
privileged and need support in the
society. Learn / practice to give back.
Acknowledge Rights of Others before
asking for your Right.
Be Tolerant / Patient; don’t indulge in leg
pulling / back biting.
Help conserve Resources and avoid all
kinds of Wastes.
27. Let’s make a Sincere Commitment
Our beloved Prophet SAW has given us an
Excellent Guiding Principle:
"What is lawful is clear and what is unlawful
is clear, but between them are certain
doubtful things which many people do not
recognize. He who guards against the
doubtful things keeps his religion and his
honor blameless, but he who falls into
doubtful things falls into what is unlawful.”
Hence, we must avoid even the Doubtful…
