Pipeline Construction In Pursuit Of The Zero Accident ProjectPeter Kinsey
Establishing clear controls and standards with contractors at the start of pipeline projects can prevent accidents from reoccurring. Two common accidents that could have been avoided include a dozer hitting a buried gas pipeline due to lack of procedures for dealing with utilities, and an excavator contacting a power line due to inadequate controls for power line hazards. Specialized training and strict enforcement of standards are needed considering the hazardous work and changing conditions involved in pipeline construction using heavy equipment like side booms, which require skilled operators to safely perform the majority of lifts.
CCW conference: Impacts of natural gas production and transmissionClean Water
James Schmid, Schmid & Co
Natural gas development has continued to expand in states like Pennsylvania and West Virginia, while states like Maryland and New York are proceeding cautiously while trying to gather additional information on environmental, health, and forest and habitat impacts. Development of the industry has left communities dealing with impacts from industrialization to farm and forest land to increased stormwater runoff of sediment from drilling operations, including pipelines, road, and drill pads. This panel will explore the changing landscape in the Chesapeake region in relation to clean water goals and what impacts local communities are experiencing as well sites are developed, roads are built, and pipelines are constructed. The panel will take an in-depth look at pipelines in the region and the siting, regulatory, safety, and environmental aspects to consider when transporting water and natural gas throughout the region.

The North Platte River in Wyoming has been removed from the state's impaired waters list due to successful efforts to reduce selenium levels. Non-point source pollution from irrigated agriculture was causing elevated selenium. Through funding from EPA grants and local partners, over 1,600 acres of flood irrigation have been converted to sprinklers, reducing contact time between water and selenium-rich soils. Piping earthen ditches has also helped to minimize the transport of selenium in the watershed. Through these projects, selenium levels have declined sufficiently for the North Platte River to be delisted.
