Christian encounters two travelers on the King's Highway named Formalist and Hypocrisy. They claim to be pilgrims but Christian is skeptical. He learns they came from the Land of Vainglory and joined the pilgrimage for praise and appearances rather than true faith. Christian warns them that outward rituals and long tradition do not establish truth or guarantee salvation, which only comes through repentance and faith in Christ.
The document describes various aspects of presentations on Pilgrim's Progress, including:
1) Accompanying videos and presentations can be accessed by emailing the author for access to file sharing accounts.
2) The author asks that he receives credit when others use the presentations.
3) Sources for text, images, and commentary used in the presentations are cited.
4) Additional presentations will be added over time, especially in winter months.
Christian encounters three men - Simple, Sloth, and Presumption - who represent spiritual dangers after conversion. Simple lacks wisdom and is easily led astray. Sloth is physically and spiritually lazy. Presumption is arrogantly self-reliant rather than dependent on God. Christian tries to warn them but they refuse his counsel, preferring to sleep rather than remain spiritually vigilant.
The man from City of Destruction has encountered Evangelist, who questions why he has turned away from the Way of salvation so quickly. The man explains that he was persuaded by Worldly-Wiseman to rid himself of his burden through his own works rather than by faith. Evangelist warns the man that he is going the wrong way and will be judged according to God's perfect law if he does not repent and return to the true gospel of salvation by grace alone through faith in Christ.
Help draws Christian out of the filthy Slough of Despond and places him on solid ground. The slough represents the "scum and filth" of doubts, fears and unbelief that accompany conviction of sin. It can lead one either forward with God's help, in retreat like Pliable, or further down. While the slough cannot be permanently fixed, God sustains believers through struggles with His promises of grace.
Based on "Respectable Sins" by Jerry Bridges, this lesson examines unthankfulness. We have a tendency to take God's blessings for granted or to recognize God's hand at work in difficult circumstances.
Baptism is the sacrament that cleanses us of original sin and makes us children of God. It is necessary for salvation and can be administered through water and the trinitarian formula. The document outlines the prefigurations of baptism in the Old Testament, its institution by Christ, effects including regeneration and an indelible character, validity requiring water and words, ordinary and extraordinary ministers, and appropriate recipients including infants and those able to profess faith. Godparents should be practicing Catholics who can guide the baptized in living a Christian life.

Worship is a privilege unique to Christians that allows them to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. It is a means of obeying God's command to worship him alone, nourishing one's spirit, and encouraging spiritual growth in oneself and others. True worship shows where one's priorities lie, expresses love for God, and provides an avenue for praising his name through spiritual gifts while communing with and showing thankfulness to God alone.

The document discusses various styles of evangelism that congregations and individual Christians can employ. It describes the confrontational style which directly presents the law and gospel message, the conversational style which focuses on developing friendships as a way to naturally share the gospel, the collegiate style which provides rational arguments for the Christian faith, the conformational style of sharing one's personal testimony, and the come and see style which invites unchurched people to church events to encounter the gospel. The pastor's role is to equip Christians in these various styles and provide opportunities for evangelism in the congregation.
Tomorrow we are starting a new series of study:
“The New Man” is a seminar that will focus on the spirit of man, its soul and its body.
We will learn the properties of each one of these three parts of man.
Our spirit is called to be the ruling part of us, actually, our spirit is the main part of our being, and is the place where the spirit of God dwells in.
We meet in Room #3 at CTF Toronto Wednesdays from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. I invite you to come and participate with us in this discovery of how to let our spirit become the ruler of our life.
The document discusses the identity of Jesus Christ based on passages from the Bible. It asserts that Jesus is God incarnate, who took on human form to sacrifice himself for humanity's sins. The cry of Jesus on the cross, "My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?" represented him experiencing the punishment for humanity's sins in our place, as the perfect substitute and fulfillment of prophecies about the Lamb of God.
This document discusses rebuilding broken bonds of fellowship with God and others through reconciliation. It begins by summarizing the rebuilding of the temple in Ezra and the call to return to God in Malachi. It then examines how sin breaks fellowship with God but that through Jesus' sacrifice, we can be recreated as new beings and restore fellowship. It notes reconciliation with others requires addressing wrongs, forgiving others as God forgave us, and maintaining right relationships through love. The conclusion urges examining one's relationships with God and others to rebuild any broken bonds of fellowship.
The document discusses Paul's preaching to the Areopagus in Athens. It notes that the Areopagus was a court that had authority over civil and religious matters in Athens. Paul would have addressed the court either on Mars Hill below the Acropolis, or in the northwest corner of the Agora, where the group held meetings. Christian apologetics aims to present rational arguments defending Christianity against objections and to justify Christian beliefs, drawing from texts in the New Testament that command believers to evangelize and spread the faith.
Based on "Respectable Sins" by Jerry Bridges, this lesson examines the sin of pride; specifically, pride of moral self-righteousness, doctrinal pride, pride of achievement, and an independent spirit. The fact that God is the source of all our success, that we need to be humble in our doctrine and opinions, and that we need to maintain a teachable spirit are all emphasized.
The church in Pergamum was commended for holding fast to Christ's name even when one of their members, Antipas, was martyred for his faith. However, some in the church had embraced the teachings of Balaam, who led Israel into idolatry and sexual immorality, and the teachings of the Nicolaitans, who encouraged the same. The church was warned to repent or face judgment from Christ with his sharp, two-edged sword.
"The 20 sessions of this seminar present 26 Biblical guidelines for making good decisions in life. The importance of understanding the distinction between God's sovereign will and God's moral will is presented and the means that God uses to direct our path is explained." The content is all theirs, I just put it in a format for my own learning and am sharing it.

The document discusses serving God and serving others. It provides several bible passages that instruct believers to fear, obey, and serve God wholeheartedly. It emphasizes not following other gods. It promises blessings for faithfully serving God, but warnings of curses for not doing so. It also discusses serving others hospitably and using gifts to serve others as servants of God. Jesus is presented as the ultimate example of serving through giving his life for others. The overall message is that serving God involves serving others for his glory.
This is an overview of some of the main points of what is being called a "hyper-grace" theology. It powerful truths that are out of balance with other parts of scripture. Hyper-grace theology can help people in some ways by emphasizing the incredible love and grace of God. Hyper-grace theology can also confuse and damage people because it seems to ignore the clear commands of the Bible to avoid sin, confess sins and "work out their salvation in fear and trembling" motivated and empowered by the love and grace of God.
Pray that the teachers of hyper-grace theology will find a biblically balanced way to help people encounter the most gracious, kind, generous, loving, compassionate Person the universe who also holds us accountable for how we live and will discipline us in love as a wise Father to bring us back to safety within godly living.
This document discusses discerning God's will and making decisions that are pleasing to God. It provides several key questions about God's will and how He reveals it. It also outlines tests to apply to decisions, including checking that they are aligned with Scripture, would not cause others to stumble, and will help the person grow in character. Guidance is found by using spiritual gifts, seeking understanding, listening to advice, and allowing God to establish steps. When unsure, one can pray and ask God to confirm the right choice through peace or indicate another option through heaviness of heart.
This document discusses the concept of slavery from a Christian perspective. It examines multiple passages from the Bible that describe believers as slaves or servants to various masters, including righteousness, sin, false gods, money, and the law. The document then focuses on Ephesians 6:5-9, which instructs Christian slaves to obey their earthly masters and Christian masters to stop threatening slaves. It emphasizes that both slaves and masters serve the same heavenly master and will be judged equally by God. Overall, the document explores what it means for Christians to be slaves or servants both spiritually and in earthly social relationships.
The document provides information about a set of presentations on John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. It includes:
1) Details on how to access accompanying PowerPoint presentations and videos.
2) A note that the presentations were created based on Bible studies done by the author at his church in Canada, and that credit should be given to the author when used.
3) Attribution for sources such as the version of Pilgrim's Progress used, textual sources, and image sources.
4) An indication that more presentations will be added online periodically.
This document discusses principles of biblical discipleship, including that it should be intentional, impacting, personal, and Christlike. It then lists nine principles of biblical discipleship, such as being incarnational, reproductive, impartation, and demonstration. It concludes by addressing common questions disciple-makers may have and providing brief answers, such as contacting a disciple within 24 hours, meeting with them weekly if possible, and getting help if unable to answer a question.
Tit 2:11-14 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
Ambassadors For Christ (2 Corinthians 5:11-21) Bible StudyDanny Scotton, Jr.

The document discusses the history and practice of tithing. It notes that many ancient countries had a form of tithing as a tax. Tithing is first mentioned in the Bible with Abraham and was later commanded under Mosaic law, though the Israelites sometimes neglected it. In Jesus' time it had become a legalistic ritual. The New Testament does not command Christians to give 10% and early Christians saw tithing as part of the Old Covenant. For Christians, giving should be motivated by love rather than law and done joyfully according to what one has received from God.
Christian encounters Mr. Worldly-Wiseman who deceives Christian into believing he can find relief from his burden and salvation through following a way of works-based morality and good deeds rather than faith in Christ. Worldly-Wiseman questions Christian's interpretation of scripture and directs him to the Village of Morality, implying its citizens have lifted their burdens through their own efforts. However, Worldly-Wiseman actually promotes a false gospel of human wisdom and righteousness contrary to salvation by grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ.
The subject of the sanctuary was the key which unlocked the mystery of the disappointment of 1844. It opened to view a complete system of truth, connected and harmonious, showing that God’s hand had directed the great advent movement and revealing present duty as it brought to light the position and work of His people. As the disciples of Jesus after the terrible night of their anguish and disappointment were “glad when they saw the Lord,” so did those now rejoice who had looked in faith for His second coming. They had expected Him to appear in glory to give reward to His servants. As their hopes were disappointed, they had lost sight of Jesus, and with Mary at the sepulcher they cried: “They have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid Him.” Now in the holy of holies they again beheld Him, their compassionate High Priest, soon to appear as their king and deliverer. Light from the sanctuary illumined the past, the present, and the future. They knew that God had led them by His unerring providence. Though, like the first disciples, they themselves had failed to understand the message which they bore, yet it had been in every respect correct. In proclaiming it they had fulfilled the purpose of God, and their labor had not been in vain in the Lord. Begotten “again unto a lively hope,” they rejoiced “with joy unspeakable and full of glory.” - CIHS 101.1

The document discusses the relationship between wealth, poverty, and spirituality. It addresses the common notion that being poor leads to greater holiness by removing attachment to material possessions. However, it argues that stewardship of wealth, using resources to help others, can allow one to do more good than living in poverty. Being poor does not inherently make one a better Christian. What matters most is one's relationship with God, not their economic status. Riches can be deceitful if one's trust is in money rather than God, but poverty does not prevent delusion or guarantee faithfulness.
Checks to unconditional covenants 9 what about apostasyDan Wooldridge
Can a born again believer in Christ become apostate? The Scriptures clearly tell us that the time will come when some Christians in the body of Christ will not endure sound doctrine. All of us ought to separate the precious from the vile, the truth from the error and sound doctrine from fables. We cannot delegate this responsibility to anybody else. To this end we have been freely given the written word of God that by the grace of God through faith in his name we might be lead into all truth through the Holy Spirit.
I hope this series of meditations will help the word of God renew your mind and that you will be ready for the appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Pilgrims Progress - Ch 02 - Pursued by Obstinate and PliableMichal Lopianowski
Christian encounters Obstinate and Pliable who try to persuade him to return to the City of Destruction. Obstinate is stubbornly loyal to worldly ways and belittles Christian's faith, while Pliable is initially persuaded to accompany Christian but lacks true conversion. The two represent different responses to the gospel in the Parable of the Sower.
This is a book you will surely love to read. it probes into the virtue of humility with JESUS CHRIST us the GREAT OBJECT OF STUDY. I hope after reading this book you will really enjoy it and be changed by it

The letter to the church in Laodicea criticizes them for being lukewarm in their faith. Jesus says they are neither cold nor hot in their devotion to him. While the church saw itself as rich and in need of nothing, Jesus says they are actually wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked. He calls them to buy gold refined by fire, white garments and eye salve to truly understand their spiritual condition and be renewed in faith.
This document discusses an organization called The Reformation Project that is working to change evangelical churches' views on homosexuality. The organization holds conferences to train LGBT Christians and allies to reform doctrine on sexual orientation and gender identity using biblical arguments. The document warns that these advocates are organized, serious, and intend to change people's minds and theology. It asserts their conclusions are based on a selective use of historical evidence, and that there is no biblical support for their views. The document encourages Christians to be prepared to address this movement's efforts to change churches' stances on these issues.
A325 hypocrites The door of heaven, I am the door of the sheep, humblefranktsao4
What kind of person can trigger god anger the most. It is not the traitor, nor is the evil doer of the world, but hypocrite. Especially, the hypocrite in the church, since they could bring people that should be in heaven to hell, that caused the redeeming blood of Jesus flow in vain and that destroyed GOD eternal plan. God can use bad people like Khoisan because they are obviously bad. So, we have to be vigilant to walk in the true. Not as a hypocrite that have no difference to the worldly people. Otherwise, we will meet GOD raging of fire.

A verse by verse commentary on Ephesians 4 1-16 dealing with Paul's teaching on the unity of the body of Christ, the ascension of Christ, and how to grow up to be like Christ. Paul goes on to deal with living as Christians of light with a host of instructions on how to do it.
Christian encounters Good-will, the gatekeeper, at the Wicket Gate. Good-will is very grave as he understands the seriousness of sin and sees souls perishing in the City of Destruction. Christian is qualified to enter as a poor, burdened sinner seeking deliverance from wrath. Good-will readily lets Christian through the gate, reflecting Jesus' eagerness to welcome sinners. Outside the gate, the Enemy tries to discourage Christian with fiery arrows of doubt and suggestion that he is unworthy, but Christian enters through Good-will's help.

It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

3. Formalist is basically a ....?
Religious performer
Hypocrisy is basically a ….?
Religious pretender
4. • Bogus entry - Tumbled over the wall
• Bogus upbringing - Born in the Land of Vainglory
• Bogus motivation - To receive praise
5. • Formalism: "the disposition to exalt what is formal or outward at
the expense of what is spiritual; the practice of using forms of
worship and of religious profession without real devotion or
conviction." [Oxford Dictionary]
• Hypocrite: comes from the Greek word, hypocrités, meaning
hypocrite, pretender, dissembler (to alter or disguise the semblance
of one's character, a feeling, design, or action so as to conceal, or
deceive as to, its real nature). [Arndt and Gingrich, A Greek-English Lexicon of the NT, p. 853.]
• Vainglory: Glory that is vain, empty, or worthless; inordinate or
unwarranted pride in one's accomplishments or qualities;
disposition or tendency to exalt oneself unduly; idle boasting or
vaunting. [Oxford Dictionary]
6. • Possibly, there had been some revival services, and at that exciting
meeting these two men had, all of a sudden, determined to be
Christians.
• They did not take the trouble to obtain true repentance and a living
faith in the crucified Savior.
• They did not care about real heart work, nor about the operations of
the Holy Spirit within them; but they resolved to make a profession
of being Christians, and to join the church.
• They thought that, as Christians wore a certain style of coat, they
would wear the same, but they were not concerned as to whether
their hearts were right with God or not.
• They came tumbling over the wall.
7. • "Oh!" say they, "we will try to be Christians; and, in order to be
Christians, there are such-and-such outward actions to be
performed.
• We will attend the prayer-meeting; we will go to the Bible-classes;
we will see the elders; we will be baptized; we will join the church;
and when we have done all this, we shall have got into the right
road, certainly.
• Have we not received, as it were, the certificate of God’s own
Church that we are all right?
• It is true that we have tumbled over the wall; we have not been
humbled on account of sin; we have not put our trust in the Lord
Jesus Christ; still, we are in the right way; does not everybody say
that we are? Therefore, all must be well with us."
8. Vain-glory!
That is where all formalists and hypocrites come from. They glory in themselves.
They think their own hearts are right. They conclude that their natural goodness
suffices, and therefore a few forms and a bare profession will serve them in the
day of judgment.
• Christian also asked them, "Whither go you?" "We are going," they
said, "for praise to Mount Zion." Alas, for love of praise! It is a most
damnable snare. We all love praise; it is useless to deny it. (Spurgeon)
9. • They respond with "I am all right; I have always attended my
parish church, or I have always gone to the youth group;" or,
• "I am all right, for I was christened," or "I am all right, for I was
baptized," etc.
• One who walked with Christ, and who even ate the dip out of
the same dish with Him, betrayed Him!
5 holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its
power; Avoid such men as these. 2 Tim 3:5
10. • Christian has learnt from Evangelist not to take the initial stance of
fellow travelers at face value
John 10:1 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into
the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber.
• How do Formalist and Hypocrisy say truth is established?
By custom and convenience!
11. • Christian has perceived the heart of the problem,
namely disobedience against God’s gospel. (Salvation through faith alone)
• "long established custom"
namely, "you just have to live a good life, and be a good person!"
• Keeble suggests this thousand year period is that medieval age of spiritual
declension under Roman Catholicism which the Puritans perceived of as
preceding the Protestant Reformation.
"established for over 1000 years – therefore that makes it right!
12. • "…it is ‘tradition’ if it is pronounced to be so by adequate
authority…It is tradition that is involved when people say ‘This is
what we have always done’ or ‘This is what we were always
taught.’" [F.F. Bruce, Tradition: Old and New, pp. 13,20.]
13. • Remember in Alice in Wonderland
• "At this moment the King, who had been for some time
busily writing in his note‐book, called out ‘Silence!’ and
read from his book, ‘Rule Forty‐Two.
• All persons more than a mile
high to leave the court.’
• Everybody looked at Alice.
• "I’m not a mile high," said Alice.
• "You are," said the King.
14. • "Nearly two miles high," added the Queen.
• "Well, I shan’t go, at any rate," said Alice:
"besides, that’s not a regular rule: you
invented it just now."
• "It’s the oldest rule in the
book," said the King.
• "Then it ought to be
Number One," said Alice.
15. • Time does not establish truth!
• Traveling on the King's highway does not mean you are a
legitimate pilgrim
Wheat/tares, sheep/goats, wheat/chaff both go to church
Matt 13:24 – 30, Matt 25:31 – 33, Luke 3:16 – 17
Possession is only 9/10ths of the law!
17. • What is Christian's "coat" to Formalist &Hypocrisy?
Goodness, right deeds, evangelical righteousness?
Col 3:12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe
yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
• What do they mean by, "provided by your neighbors"?
Assumed as a result of hanging around with other
believers/church goers.
18. • "We do not see where you differ from us in the
slightest!"
1Cor 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the
Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot
understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.
• It is well to remember, however, that though the two
thieves crucified alongside Jesus appeared similar
from man’s perspective, yet one of these was clothed
with a cloak similar to that of Christian!
19. • That unbelievers will at times recognize evident righteousness, at
least in the privacy of their hearts.
Matt 5:16 "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your
good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
1Pet 2:12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in
which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as
they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.
• This is not to say that they will necessarily desire and openly
acknowledge godliness when they see it.
• Even so, the reflection of the light of true Christian grace and virtue
is an exhibition that the unholy darkness of this world cannot
extinguish
John 1:5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not
comprehend it.
20. • Christian tells them plainly that attempts to keep laws and
ordinances cannot save them. We can never be justified
by our works:
Gal 2:16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the
Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus,
so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law;
since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.
Rom 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies
the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness
21.
22. • Be not too fast, dear friends, in telling everybody about the secret
of the Lord, or about your inward experience.
• When you meet with anyone who can appreciate these things, then
make a point of glorifying God by your testimony; but when you are
talking with a mere formalist, or a cunning hypocrite, it is better, as
soon as you perceive that he is trusting to what he finds in himself,
to show him the falsehood of his own supposed righteousness,
than to say much concerning what the Lord has done for you.
• Beware of disobeying the command of our Lord concerning casting
pearls before swine, lest they turn again, and rend you.
• When you talk of walking humbly before God, they will at once
begin to laugh at you. [Spurgeon]
23. • Prov 26:4-5
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Or you will also be like him.
5 Answer a fool as his folly deserves, that he not be wise in his own eyes.
• First part is easy, remember:
• 2Tim 2:24-26 24 The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but
be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, 25 with gentleness
correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them
repentance ….
• Second part begs the question why and how?
• "Why" first:
Failure to do so could make the fool feel good about his or her foolish position,
reinforce it, and make the fool even less open to considering the truth that could
set him or her free.
24. • Prov 26:4-5
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Or you will also be like him.
5 Answer a fool as his folly deserves, that he not be wise in his own eyes.
• "How"
Consider lobbing the question back at him, because when a person's choice
of words or tone of voice tells you that he or she isn't looking for an answer,
it's best not to give one.
Questioning him/her might cause them to see the foolishness of their thinking.
[Questioning Evangelism by Newman]
25. • In one of his classes a student challenged him with statements that were
both offensive and incorrect.
• Dallas paused and told the class that that was a good place to end their
discussion.
• Somebody asked Dallas afterward why he had not countered the
students' argument and put him in his place. "I'm practicing the discipline
of not having to have the last word."
• This is part of why Dallas would never debate non-believers. He would
engage in a mutual conversation where both parties could seek for truth
together.
• Through the last week of his life he was still hoping to help believers
engage non-believers by looking together at questions where people get
stuck in their actual lives rather than by trying to win arguments.
26. • Some measure of faith of a certain sort
• Will try to be Christians
There are such-and-such outward actions to be performed:
attend the prayer-meeting
go to the Bible-classes
will see the elders
will be baptized
will join the church
• "We do not mind being christened, confirmed, taking the
sacrament, and going to church or chapel; but this repenting of sin,
this believing, this clinging to Christ, this seeking after holiness, Ah!
It is too much!"
27. • no belief
• just a pretty story, but then it is a very respectable story
• "if I pretend to believe it, people will think the better of me"
• "if I get into the ministry, I could pick up a good living that way"
• "it makes you seem to be a good sort of person"
• get the respect and esteem of your friends
• your mother will be pleased
• your husband will be glad; all your friends will feel so satisfied,
• people will make quite a fuss over you
• does not care about the secret power of vital godliness
• It is enough for him that he has got into the Christian Church
28. 1. long to be honored by men. (Mt. 6:2).
2. love to pray in public to be seen by men. (Mt. 6:5).
3. look somber and disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. (Mt. 6:15).
4. notice the speck in their brother’s eye, but ignore the plank in their own. (Mt. 7:5).
5. nullify the word of God for the sake of their traditions. (Mt. 15:6 7).
6. have evil intent and try to trap Jesus in His words. (Mt. 22:18-19).
7. shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. (Mt. 23:13).
8. ignore the weightier matters of the law. (Mt. 23:23).
9. are only concerned about the outward appearance. (Mt. 23:25).
10. look beautiful on the outside but are full of dead man’s bones on inside. (Mt. 23:27)
29. • Formalism and Hypocrisy are opposite sides of the same coin.
They glory in themselves
They think their own hearts are right
They conclude that their natural goodness suffices, and therefore a few forms
and a bare profession will serve them in the day of judgment
Seeking after pride
They loved the praise of men more than the praise of God
Let each man keep to his own religion; you go your way, and leave me to mine
"You need not trouble about faith, or those other weighty matters which concern
the soul and God; but if you go to your place of worship, and take your seat there
regularly, all will be well with you." –
This is false religion!!!
30. • 1Cor 10:12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that
he does not fall.
• But the moment when, for any reason, the form becomes more
attractive than the spiritual fact for which it stands, when the bridge
detains rather than forwards the seeking faith of the soul, when for
any reason a man begins to love the road more than the
communion to which it leads, the altar more than the name that
sanctifies it, the cross more than the Crucified, then he begins to
pervert needed means of worship into unlawful ends. He is
ministering to worldly tastes, and though he still call it religion, he is
in fact a formalist, a promising Pharisee. [Bible Illustrator, Exell, Joseph S.]
• As John Piper puts it, you end up loving 'loving God'!
31. • Note that the story of Formalist and Hypocrisy comes between the
Cross and the Hill of Difficulty. These men took a short cut to avoid
the cross; then they take a long way around to avoid the hill (as we
shall see). Many of the longest wanderings in life have been begun
to avoid a very little hill.
• Formalist and Hypocrisy were men who wanted people to believe
they were Christians, when they were not.
• But it should always be remembered that hypocrisy is an evidence
of the existence of genuine religion.
There would be no counterfeit coins if genuine coins were not in circulation.
There would be no pretended pilgrims to the Celestial City if true pilgrims were
not on the road thither.
There would be no hypocrites if there were no true servants of the Most High.
