These Pilgrim’s Progress Presentations are as a result of Bible Studies I did at my home church in Moose
Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. The only thing I ask is that when you use them to present to others, that you
give the Good Lord credit through my name (Michal Lopianowski).
Τhe version of Pilgrim's Progress I am using is the one by Barry Horner
Most of the text in the presentations, if it is not sited on the page itself, comes from Barry Horner’s
Commentary on the Pilgrim’s Progress from his website: www.bunyanministries.org
The comic snippets come from CREATOR ART STUDIO, published by KINGSTONE Comics at
www.kingstonemedia.com
Any place where I mention Maltese Website as a reference, the material was taken from
www.lavvanztalpellegrin.com; which no longer seems to be working
Other pictures are from www.garretttaylor.com and illustrations from Mike Wimmer
As I complete more presentations I will be putting them on line; usually in the winter months
3. • With today’s lecture, we begin the second half of
Pilgrim’s Progress.
• Graceless has become a Christian by faith in Jesus
Christ, has received forgiveness for his
• sins, has been clothed in Christ's righteousness, and
has been sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.
• We can now become students of Christian's
sanctification – God making him holy.

5. We go from three Shining Ones to three
careless ones.
Young Christian has just experienced
great blessing, deliverance, and a
renewed sense of joyous assurance and
can hardly conceive of either rejection or
of indifference toward the truth he so
passionately embraces.
Like the "Morning after a revival"
"Indifference" is the persecution of North
America!
7. • Note that Bunyan stoops over these three sleepers, not to gossip
nor to thank God that he is not as they are, but to help save them if
he can.
• That is; Christian, immediately after his conversion, becomes a
personal worker.
• Eph 5:14 For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.”
8. • Prov 23:34 And you will be like one who lies down in the middle of the
sea, Or like one who lies down on the top of a mast.
Result :1 Tim 1:19 - keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and
suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.
• Rom 13:11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to
awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we
believed.
• Recall Man in the Iron Cage
• 1Cor 16:13 Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
• 1Thess 5:6-7 so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. For
those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.
9.
10. • What do the Shackles represent?
• Many who have transient convictions, learn to talk about religion,
but still are chained in bondage, to sin and Satan
• They reject instruction and hate all trouble, and are confident that
it is all well with themselves.
• Thus they sleep on until death and judgment awake them!
11. • 1Pet 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your
adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion,
seeking someone to devour.
• Thus the Christian pilgrimage is more biblically and
realistically portrayed as a hazardous expedition rather
than a leisurely blissful pathway that offers frequent
periods of pleasurable repose.
12.
13. • The Simple need Prudence
Prov 1:1 (NKJV) The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:
Prov 1:4 (NKJV) To give prudence to the simple, To the young man
knowledge and discretion
Prov 8:5 O you simple ones, understand prudence, And you fools, be of
an understanding heart.
Ps 19:7 …The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
14. • The Simple are in Danger and don't know it
Prov 1:32 For simpletons turn away from me to death. Fools are destroyed by their own
complacency.
• The Simple are Gullible
Prov 14:15-16 15 Only simpletons believe everything they’re told! The prudent carefully
consider their steps. 16 The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with
reckless confidence.
Eph 4:14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves
and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in
deceitful scheming;
• The Simple inherit their simple nature from Adam
Prov 14:18 (NKJV) The simple inherit folly, But the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
• The Simple ignores Danger
Prov 22:3 (NKJV) A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, But the simple pass on
and are punished.
15. • The simple are aimless, inexperienced, drifting into
temptation – almost courting it.
7 and I have seen among the simple, I have perceived among
the youths, a young man lacking sense,
8 passing along the street near her corner, taking the road to
her house
9 in the twilight, in the evening, at the time of night and
darkness.
10 And behold, the woman meets him, dressed as a prostitute,
wily of heart. Proverbs 7:7–10 (ESV)
16. 9 How can a young man keep his way pure?
By keeping it according to Your Word.
10 With all my heart I have sought You;
Do not let me wander from Your commandments.
11 Your Word I have treasured in my heart,
That I may not sin against You.
12 Blessed are You, O LORD;
Teach me Your statutes.
Psalm 119:9–12
17.
18.
19.
20. • The sluggard is committed to sleep and a life of ease
6 Go to the ant, O sluggard, Observe her ways and be wise, 7
Which, having no chief, Officer or ruler, 8 Prepares her food in
the summer And gathers her provision in the harvest. 9 How long
will you lie down, O sluggard? When will you arise from your
sleep? 10 “A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the
hands to rest” Prov 6:6–10
21. • The sluggard is restless and never realizes his own
desires.
“The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the
diligent are fully satisfied” Prov. 13:4
“A sluggard does not plow in season; so at harvest time he
looks but finds nothing” Prov. 20:4
• The sluggard is full of pride and arrogance.
“The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who
answer discreetly” Prov. 26:16
22. • The sluggard makes little or no progress.
“The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a
highway” Prov. 15:19
• The sloth is lacking in will and energy.
“The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he will not even bring it back to his
mouth! Prov. 19:24
• The sluggard refuses life and is making his journey towards death.
“The sluggard’s craving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to
work. All day long he craves for more, but the righteous give without sparing”
Prov. 21:25 26
• The sluggard is immobile, stationary, and anchored to his bed.
“As a door turns on it hinges, so a sluggard turns on his bed” Prov. 26:14
23. • An Important Lesson
30 I passed by the field of the sluggard And by the vineyard of the
man lacking sense, 31 And behold, it was completely overgrown with
thistles; Its surface was covered with nettles, And its stone wall was
broken down. 32 When I saw, I reflected upon it; I looked, and
received instruction. 33 “A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding
of the hands to rest,” 34 Then your poverty will come as a robber
And your want like an armed man. Prov 24:30–34
• Too lazy to study the Word and persevere in the faith, he rests
upon some decision in the past which deludes him into believing
that his place in heaven is secure.
• Past performance is no guarantee of future faith!
24.
25. • Meaning?
• "I can take care of myself
• He had been at the cross with his past sin, and had left the cross to
commit the same sin at the first opportunity. Presumption presumed
upon pardon. He presumed upon the abounding grace of God. He
presumed upon the blood of Christ." [Alexander Whyte]
• Canadian Equivalent
• "Every person must paddle his own canoe"
26. • Personifies arrogant self-sufficiency
• Ps 19:13 Also keep back Your servant from presumptuous sins;
Let them not rule over me;
• Presumptuous Sins?
• "presumptuous sins" are ones which would be as a result of arrogant or willful
disobedience. (The sin of excessive pride)
• A form of self-confidence, which makes overconfident assumptions concerning
one’s importance and rights. It is criticized as a form of arrogance that is
unacceptable among believers, whose lives should be characterized by
humility. [Dictionary of Bible Themes]
27. • His name says it all
24 The proud and arrogant person —“Mocker” is his name —
behaves with insolent fury. Prov 21:24 (NIV)
• Gets a taste of his own medicine
33 The LORD’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he
blesses the home of the righteous. 34 He mocks proud
mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.
Proverbs 3:33–34 (NIV)
• A mocker is prevented from obtaining wisdom
6 The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge
comes easily to the discerning. Prov 14:6 (NIV)
28. • A Mocker hates to be corrected
12 Mockers resent correction, so they avoid the wise.
Prov 15:12 (NIV)
1 A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does
not respond to rebukes. Prov 13:1 (NIV)
7 Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes
the wicked incurs abuse. Prov 9:7 (NIV)
8 Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise
and they will love you. Prov 9:8 (NIV)
29. • They are foolish to reject needed counsel
• Even Christian has accepted advice from the following:
• Evangelist, Help, Good-will, and the Interpreter
• There are none so captive as those who call bondage
freedom, as those who call freedom bondage, as those
who call evil good and good evil (Isa. 5:20), as those who
are blind and yet claim to see (John 9:39-41).
30. • Two of them typify two of the seven deadly sins:
Pride (Presumption)
Envy
Wrath
Gluttony
Avarice (Greed)
Lust
Sloth
31. • The fate of Presumption and his companions is depicted
in the Second Part of the Pilgrim's Progress.
When Christiana and her party laid readied this place,
"behold Simple, Sloth, and Presumption were hanged up in
irons a little way off on the other side;" and Great-heart says
in explanation, "They were men of very bad qualities; they
had no mind to be pilgrims themselves, and whomsoever
they could they hindered."
• It will be seen that those who in earlier years were merely
indifferent have come in a later day to be positive
enemies of the truth. [Maltese Website]
32. • It says they are "pilgrims"
Professing or True?
How did they get in the "Way"?
• You have to wonder when you come across people who
claim to be saved, but have little or no excite-ment about
what Christ has done for them!
• Too lazy to study the Word, too lazy to come out to pray,
too lazy to encourage a brother or sister in the Lord …
What kind of a Christian constitutes such behaviour!
33. • There are many people who profess Christ like these three. It takes nothing out of
them, because they put nothing into their faith. They have no hunger for God’s Word.
They have the slimmest of interest in what it says and teaches. Their faith comes
second to everything else in their lives. And a naivety beyond belief ensnares them
into a deep spiritual lethargy. … It’s a curse, that potentially has a devastating effect.
They have no interest in furthering their knowledge of God and His Word … How can
they ever hope to proceed? …
• To think these men had been at the cross, - and surely they had to be to come to that
point in the journey. They had left their burden down at the cross, but from the short
distance from the top of the hill to the bottom, they had picked up another burden …
and it had resulted in them - falling asleep in their idleness. (David Greenaway –
Kirkcaldy Church)
• If they are true believers, then like the man in the iron cage, and like in Heb 6, they
have "fallen away" (not pressed onto maturity), and there hanging would have to be
an act of Divine Judgement, because there is no longer a sacrifice for sins this great!
(David Greenaway – Kirkcaldy Church)(David Greenaway – Kirkcaldy Church)
34. • They are not aware of their desperate situation and
seem to think all is well.
• They represent types of religious indifference.
• These three did not see the chains on their feet,
because they were put on while they were asleep.
• So they were in great danger, but did not know it.
• Indifference is in our own day a far deadlier foe of
Christ than even Infidelity or open Irreligion. If
Infidelity has slain its thousands. Indifference has
slain its tens of thousands. [Maltese Website]
35. One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
'Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife.
Ella Wheeler Wilcox 1916
