NoSQL databases are everywhere and they're here to stay. For a successful scalable web application, it is vital to understand the capabilities of NoSQL databases. Relational databases are not dead, either, and they will not be. Understanding the abilities of each will help you to make better architectural decisions. Hybrid database solutions could use the best of the two worlds. In this talk, we will delve into the important decision making factors for each. As an example, we will study an online game at Ubisoft Montreal that switched from a SQL database to a polyglot persistence with no data loss and no downtime.

(Celia Kung, LinkedIn) Kafka Summit SF 2018 For several years, LinkedIn has been using Kafka MirrorMaker as the mirroring solution for copying data between Kafka clusters across data centers. However, as LinkedIn data continued to grow, mirroring trillions of Kafka messages per day across data centers uncovered the scale limitations and operability challenges of Kafka MirrorMaker. To address such issues, we have developed a new mirroring solution, built on top our stream ingestion service, Brooklin. Brooklin MirrorMaker aims to provide improved performance and stability, while facilitating better management through finer control of data pipelines. Through flushless Kafka produce, dynamic management of data pipelines, per-partition error handling and flow control, we are able to increase throughput, better withstand consume and produce failures and reduce overall operating costs. As a result, we have eliminated the major pain points of Kafka MirrorMaker. In this talk, we will dive deeper into the challenges LinkedIn has faced with Kafka MirrorMaker, how we tackled them with Brooklin MirrorMaker and our plans for iterating further on this new mirroring solution.

You cannot operate what you cannot measure. In this talk, I am going to present the built-in metrics framework of Kafka Streams that supports monitoring Kafka Streams applications. You will learn how to setup monitoring of metrics for your Kafka Streams applications and you will hear about the following recent improvements to the metrics framework that aim to extend and simplify monitoring. KIP-444 aims to simplify and extend the built-in metrics framework. The RocksDB metrics introduced in KIP-471 and KIP-607 allow you to look directly into the built-in persistent state stores of your Kafka Streams applications. Finally, KIP-613 specifies metrics that measure end-to-end latencies in your applications. This talk will help you collect intel about the behavior of your Kafka Streams applications, and will allow you to reason about the deployment. In the end, you will be able to better understand your applications and run them in a more robust manner.

Many of the Big Data and IoT use cases are based on combining data from multiple data sources and to make them available on a Big Data platform for analysis. The data sources are often very heterogeneous, from simple files, databases to high-volume event streams from sensors (IoT devices). It’s important to retrieve this data in a secure and reliable manner and integrate it with the Big Data platform so that it is available for analysis in real-time (stream processing) as well as in batch (typical big data processing). In past some new tools have emerged, which are especially capable of handling the process of integrating data from outside, often called Data Ingestion. From an outside perspective, they are very similar to a traditional Enterprise Service Bus infrastructures, which in larger organization are often in use to handle message-driven and service-oriented systems. But there are also important differences, they are typically easier to scale in a horizontal fashion, offer a more distributed setup, are capable of handling high-volumes of data/messages, provide a very detailed monitoring on message level and integrate very well with the Hadoop ecosystem. This session will present and compare Apache NiFi, StreamSets and the Kafka Ecosystem and show how they handle the data ingestion in a Big Data solution architecture.

There was a time not long ago when we used relational databases for everything. Even if the data wasn’t particularly relational, we shoehorned it into relational tables, often because that was the only database we had. Thank god these dark times are over and now we have many different kinds of NoSQL databases: Document, realtime, graph, column, but that does not solve the problem that the same data might be a graph from one perspective, but a collection of documents from another. It would be really nice if we can access that same data in many different ways, depending on the context of what we want to achieve in our current task. As software architects this is not easy to solve but definitely possible: We can design an architecture using Event Sourcing: Capture the data with Debezium, post it to a Kafka queue, use Kafka Streams to model the data the way we like, and store the data in various different data sources, so we can synchronize data between data sources.

Apache Hudi is a data lake platform, that provides streaming primitives (upserts/deletes/change streams) on top of data lake storage. Hudi powers very large data lakes at Uber, Robinhood and other companies, while being pre-installed on four major cloud platforms. Hudi supports exactly-once, near real-time data ingestion from Apache Kafka to cloud storage, which is typically used in-place of a S3/HDFS sink connector to gain transactions and mutability. While this approach is scalable and battle-tested, it can only ingest data in mini batches, leading to lower data freshness. In this talk, we introduce a Kafka Connect Sink Connector for Apache Hudi, which writes data straight into Hudi's log format, making the data immediately queryable, while Hudi's table services like indexing, compaction, clustering work behind the scenes, to further re-organize for better query performance.

Internet of Things use cases are a perfect match for processing with a streaming platform such as Kafka and the Confluent Platform. Some of the questions to be answered are: How do we feed the data from our devices into Kafka? Do we directly send data to Kafka? Is Kafka accessible from outside the organization over the internet? What if we want to use a more specific IoT protocol such as MQTT or CoAP in between? How would we integrate it with Kafka? How can we enrich IoT streaming data with static data sitting in a traditional system? This session will provide answers to these and other questions using a fictitious use case of a trucking company. Trucks are constantly sending data about position and driving habits, which can be used to derive real-time information and actions. A large part of the presentation will be a live demo. The demo will show the implementation of the pipeline incrementally: starting with sending the truck movement events directly to Kafka, then adding MQTT to the sensor data ingestion, followed by using Kafka Streams and KSQL to apply stream processing on the information received. The final pipeline will demonstrate the application of Kafka Connect with MQTT and JDBC source connectors for data ingestion and event stream enrichment, and Kafka Streams and KSQL for stream processing. The key takeaway is the live demonstration of a working end-to-end IoT streaming data ingestion pipeline using Kafka technologies.

The platform specific languages are often harder to integrate with and require longer adoption time. To fill this gap many NoSql (Not-only-Sql) vendors are building SQL layers for their platforms. It is worth exploring the driving forces behind this trend, how it fits in your BigData stacks and how we can adopt it in our favorite tools. However building SQL engine from scratch is a daunting job and frameworks like Apache Calcite can help you with the heavy lifting. Calcite allow you to integrate SQL parser, cost-based optimizer, and JDBC with your big data system. Calcite has been used to empower many Big-Data platforms such as Hive, Spark, Drill Phoenix to name some. I will walk you through the process of building a SQL access layer for Apache Geode (In-Memory Data Grid). I will share my experience, pitfalls and technical consideration like balancing between the SQL/RDBMS semantics and the design choices and limitations of the data system. Hopefully this will enable you to add SQL capabilities to your prefered NoSQL data system.

ETL is the process of extracting data from one location, transforming it, and loading it into a different location, often for the purposes of collection and analysis. As Hadoop becomes a common technology for sophisticated analysis and transformation of petabytes of structured and unstructured data, the task of moving data in and out efficiently becomes more important and writing transformation jobs becomes more complicated. Talend provides a way to build and automate complex ETL jobs for migration, synchronization, or warehousing tasks. Using Talend's Hadoop capabilities allows users to easily move data between Hadoop and a number of external data locations using over 450 connectors. Also, Talend can simplify the creation of MapReduce transformations by offering a graphical interface to Hive, Pig, and HDFS. In this talk, Cédric Carbone will discuss how to use Talend to move large amounts of data in and out of Hadoop and easily perform transformation tasks in a scalable way.

Overview of USAAs decision drivers and journey to migrate from our IBM BigInsights Hadoop platform to Hortonworks Data Platform. Many obstacles challenged our ability to respond to demands of our business data needs and analytic capabilities. In addition to migrating 1.5 PB (500 TB useable) of data to our new HDP environment, we were introducing a new security model with Kerberos/AD integration, data governance, as well as many new HDP services that were unavailable within our BigInsights platform. We'll discuss overall scope of work for this year long journey and our approach in bringing enterprise adoption of a new Hadoop platform. We still have many efforts under way to further enhance our data delivery patterns, information governance process and procedures, and optimized consumption within our HDP platform, but we are now better positioned to provide a flexible, secure, and managed Hadoop platform with focused innovation to meet USAAs strategic initiatives.
