New smart shoe IOFIT prepares for
upcoming release
IOFIT is a new pair of smart shoes and corresponding app
developed by the Samsung-backed startup Salted Venture.
IOFIT is being marketed as a smart balance shoe uniquely
designed for fitness and golf that provides useful information
and customizable coaching tools to empower people to train
smarter and coach better.
The IOFIT uses pressure sensors and accelerometers to
measure balance, ground contact force, weight shift and
center of gravity of the user. The app is able to display this
data as well as offer instant feedback to help the user with
their performance and balance. There is a built-in video
recording feature that allows the user to replay their workout
and offers coaches the opportunity to leave feedback on
videos with voice-over comments to assist users on the
improvements that they can make
There are already plans to develop custom designs for other
sports to accompany the fitness/running and golf releases.

Google’s Project Loon set to begin
carrier testing
Project Loon is a research and development project being
developed by Alphabet/Google X with the mission of
providing Internet access to rural and remote areas. The
project uses high-altitude balloons placed in the stratosphere
at an altitude of about 11 miles to create an aerial wireless
network with up to 4G-LTE speeds. These balloons move
with the wind using algorithms that tell them where to go.
After completing a difficult development phase, Astro Teller,
head of Alphabet’s X unit, announced at the annual TED
Conferences in Vancouver that Google will begin testing with
carriers in Indonesia and other areas this year. This will mark
the first time that the system has been tested properly on
consumer networks. Google will be partnering with local
carriers to activate the project which has reached the ability
to deliver a 15 Mbps connection.
The tests will roll out in areas with the greatest need, such as
Sri Lanka where less than a quarter of the 20 million
population has access to the Internet. If successful, this
project has the ability to impact the world with a current goal
of ensuring five billion people will have Internet access within
5-10 years.

Doctors announce 3D printing of
functioning tissue and organs
Long gone are the days of considering 3D printing as a
means for creating unique designs and toys. Doctors at the
Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine announced
that they successfully developed a 3D print of "living" tissue
and organs that functioned properly when implanted in
animals. So far these prints have consisted of muscle
structures, bone tissue, and ear tissue.
The team has used a 3D printer named the Integrated Organ
and Printing System (ITOP). ITOP uses biodegradable,
plastic-like material to form the shape of tissues, as well as
water-based ink to hold cells and a series of micro channels
to allow oxygen and nutrients to flow through.
One of their more notable experiments was the printing of
human-sized ears that were implanted under the skin of
mice. The prints were able to effectively integrate into the
animals over the course of two months resulting in the
formation of cartilage and blood vessels. The next step
would be to develop tissue for human trials and begin
developing more complex tissues and organs.
