Unicode is a computing industry standard for the consistent encoding, representation, and handling of text expressed in most of the world's writing systems. It provides a unique numeric code point value for characters, with the basic multilingual plane (BMP) containing the first 65,536 code points to represent common character sets. Beyond the BMP are other planes that allow Unicode to support well over 1 million code points.
