PE3 - REFINING PERFORMANCE IN PE This is an Internal Assessment Unit. It represents 25% of the A Level Award. This unit has two components: Refining Performance (Performer, Coach or Official) Investigative Research which will be synoptic in nature Coursework / Practical
PE4 Written examination paper. Compulsory structured questions and one essay from a choice of two – 2 hours Exam date June 2012 Exam Assessment
1. REFINING SPORTING PERFORMANCE AND ENHANCING HEALTH a. Performance analysis and evaluation of health status (specific to different roles): Biomechanical (movement analysis). Video/Real time. Notational analysis. Testing (Types and Protocols). Questionnaires.  Health screening. Monitoring exercise programmes. b. Health of the nation: Current concerns and trends. Influences on health. Health promotion. Policies and initiatives.
1. REFINING SPORTING PERFORMANCE AND ENHANCING HEALTH c. Management of stress/anxiety: The nature of stress/anxiety. Cognitive and somatic stress reduction techniques. d. Motivation: Achievement motivation. Management of arousal levels. Attribution theory
2. PARTICIPATION AND PERFORMANCE IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY a. Opportunities and pathways. opportunities for progression in physical activity – sport pyramid system – mass participation/excellence and elitism – talent identification and development initiatives; sporting structures in the UK, government and other agencies concerned and national governing bodies; recreational pathways – lifelong involvement – local and national government initiatives; involvement of health agencies, local and national government initiatives
2. PARTICIPATION AND PERFORMANCE IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY B Social differentiation: class, gender, race, age, disability. C socio-cultural and economic factors that affect opportunity, participation, provision, participation, attitudes and values. These should include the following: finance/income, leisure time, time management, education, physical education, resources, family, peer pressure, role models, facilities, transport. deviance in sport – pressures causing drug taking - ethical viewpoint  gamesmanship / sportsmanship.
2. PARTICIPATION AND PERFORMANCE IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY d. Commercialisation of sport: media influences and sponsorship; consumerism – market forces/sport industry influences; globalisation of sport; role models as a commodity. e. Scientific and technological developments: scientific and technological development as they affect sport and physical activity in terms of the participant, coach, official and spectator e.g. changes to equipment, and clothing, improved nutrition, and advances in media technology
