In Peru, nurseries called "nidos" accept children from age 1 and some teachers are bilingual. Preschool education was not widely established until the 1970s when Pilar Deza advocated for preschools and daycares. Reggio Emilia preschools were introduced in 1999. In the 1980s, Peru recognized three levels of education: nurseries and kindergarten, primary and secondary basic education, and higher education of pre-university and university. Kindergartens called "jardins" serve 3-5 year olds for mornings and use Montessori and other approaches. Schools also offer preschool programs like toddlers, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten.
