Abraham Maslow developed the theory of a hierarchy of needs consisting of physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. He proposed that people are motivated to fulfill lower level needs before addressing higher level needs, and that self-actualized people are those who have satisfied their basic needs and are able to pursue personal growth and achieving their full potential. Maslow also identified characteristics of self-actualized people including superior perception of reality, increased acceptance of themselves and others, and high levels of creativity.
