1. Personal Statement
As a person I am level headed and patient but can also be assertive when required
and have the charisma of a businessman. I have always wished to follow a career in
Project Management. I have undertaken a number of projects such as the design
and implementation of a website for a local company called “Morways”. They are a
flooring company in West Sussex and decided that they wished to expand further by
also selling doors. Once made aware of the opportunity, I didn’t hesitate to contact
the company and offer my services. I was required to provide them with a portfolio of
website designing work. This extensively covered all my school and college work and
my previous design and implementation of the “Millennium trust” website:
http://www.everystudentmatters.org. Within two weeks I was contacted and offered a
contract in order to design their site. Such a big project I fully understood would be
very time consuming, so using my initiative I asked a colleague of mine who also has
high knowledge of website development to assist me. My role within the team was
project manager and I used the Systems Life Cycle model for all the decisions that I
made. The first month saw extensive investigative approaches such as interviews
and questionnaires used to find out what the client wanted from the site in order to
produce a requirements specification. Once completed, I was then able to move
forward with the design and create a mock up of the system for them to see and to
gain feedback of what was good and what would need improving. After this, the
building of the system was on going, with extensive testing being carried out
eventually reaching completion of the site and the handover stage. The sites purpose
was to simply allow people to see the range of doors on offer. However the ability to
buy a door, had to be done either by phoning or visiting the shop. The project as a
whole took around 4 months to complete. The software used was Word Press, as we
wanted to deliver a content management site. The reason being that the client’s ICT
knowledge was not high and a content management scheme would allow them to
understand and learn how to make changes easily and without frustration. The
website can be viewed at “http://www.moredoorsuk.com”.
At a work placement 3 years ago at John Wiley's & Sons I gained experience in
market research, publishing and using publishing tools. Insight into the web side of
the business and communicating news via social networking was invaluable. An
even more enjoyable placement at a local newspaper "The Argus" allowed me to
work on the web side of the business, writing, editing and updating articles using a
content management system. Keeping fit is important to me. I am a member of the
schools first team football squad playing regularly against local and county schools. I
am a regular first team player for my current team Storrington FC, playing at county
level. During my time at school I was a member of the school Liaison Committee and
had significant responsibility as a school ambassador. Further evidence of my
commitment to sport is my twelve-year membership of my local football club. Another
contribution was my participation in the 2013 and 2014 Brighton half marathons with
my fastest time being 1 hour 37 minutes. Transferable skills in which I have gained
from sports, is teamwork, hard work and the will to succeed. Whilst at sixth form and
as part of my Silver DOFE award I volunteered at a local centre for the elderly, which
I found to be extremely rewarding. I was particularly moved when I managed to teach
a gentleman how to use a Galaxy Tablet. In total I have completed 30 hours of
volunteering. I am a very reliable, confident and outgoing person. Coupled with
strong leadership is my willingness to listen to others. Always happy, I have a very
good sense of humour and see myself as someone who is very approachable.
