Telepresence robots (TR)
A telepresence robot (TR) is a remote-controlled device on wheels
composed from: a screen display, microphones, speakers, cameras, battery,
software, and wireless connectivity.
The remote operator of the TR:
• can view and hear people and objects around the TR as well be heard and
viewed by these people.
• feels like been physically present at the TR’s location.
• can drive the TR close to specific people or objects, go around them, and zoom
on them.
• has control and autonomy on how, where, and when to move as well as what to
see and talk.

Education: Ill students participate in class using a TR from home;
Gemba Walk: Aircraft maintenance company lets customers drive a TR;
Retail: Furniture manufacturer invites customers into its showroom to browse
their inventory and discuss design options using a TR;
Telework: Litigation attorney maintains an open line of communication with
his/her colleagues and staff in a remote office using a TR.

http://www.trine-platform.com/
• TRinE Erasmus+ project http://www.trine-platform.com/
Investigates methods to effectively use TR in education;
Collects experiences of implementations of TR in education;
Proposes appropriate guidelines both at technical and pedagogical levels.
Compared to common teleteaching methods such as video conferencing
solutions, the advantages of TR lie in the possibility of actively controlling the
TR and thus also occupying physical space in the remote location.
Interviews
TRinE team conducted 20 Interviews with
professors, teachers, students, technicians, and others
in Austria, France, Iceland, and U.S.A.
TRinE Interviews were conducted by B&P Emerging Technologies
Consultancy Lab Ltd, DUK (Danube University Krems), KIT (Karlsruhe
Institute of Technology), and UNAK (University of Akureyri).

Strengths of TR in education
TR enables remote students to
• feel present,
• participate,
• communicate, and
• socialize with their classmates.
Prof. A. Economides, https://www.uom.gr,
TRinE project: http://www.trine-platform.com/
10
Opportunities of TR in education
• Remote learning,
• Remote teaching,
• Remote advising,
• Remote communication,
• Remote collaboration, and
• Remote participation in education.
Prof. A. Economides, https://www.uom.gr,
TRinE project: http://www.trine-platform.com/
11
Weaknesses of TR in education
• Inability to use elevators, doors, stairs, etc.
• Privacy concerns and data security,
• High cost,
• Short battery life,
• Long delays in repairing TR,
• Risks of misusing TR.
Prof. A. Economides, https://www.uom.gr,
TRinE project: http://www.trine-platform.com/
12
Challenges of TR in education
• Inability to move through doors, elevators, stairs, etc.
without assistance,
• inadequate WiFi coverage of schools,
• Need for support staff,
• Noisy environments.
Prof. A. Economides, https://www.uom.gr,
TRinE project: http://www.trine-platform.com/
13
Recommendations
• Equip TR with:
4G/5G capabilities, easy-of-use, extra sensors, arms and gesticulation,
high-quality microphones, speakers, video recording, displays, zoom in
and out, software for obstacle detection, noise cancelation, speech-to-
text, translation, auto-navigation, passwords, and compatibility.
• User training.
Prof. A. Economides, https://www.uom.gr,
TRinE project: http://www.trine-platform.com/
14
Conclusions
20 Interviews in Austria, France, Iceland, and U.S.A. pointed out
that:
TR may provide remote learning, teaching, advising, communication,
collaboration, and participation in education.
The remote person feels like being present and belonging to the class.
Challenges include the TR cost, inability to use elevators and stairs, short
battery life, need for support staff, long delays in repairing, inadequate WiFi
coverage of schools, noisy environments, privacy concerns, and data security.
Recommendations include equipping TR with 4G/5G capabilities, easy-of-use,
extra sensors, arms and gesticulation, high-quality microphones, speakers,
video recording, displays, zoom in and out, software for obstacle detection,
noise cancelation, speech-to-text, translation, auto-navigation, passwords, and
compatibility as well as Users training.
