The Italian dictator Mussolini decided to conquer Greece in 1940 after Germany conquered much of Europe under Hitler. On October 28, 1940, Mussolini demanded that Greece surrender ports, roads, and other assets, but Greece refused. Germany then invaded Greece on April 6, 1941, overwhelming the exhausted Greek forces. Greece suffered under occupation until its liberation on October 12, 1944.
