this world possesses a set to genes that have from her mother and half from her father. It only
makes a sense that the presence of both a father and a mother are crucially important in helping
to determine the wellbeing of their child.
When a baby is newborn, he or she has to get used to living in a different environment from the
womb, where a baby is completely surrounded by warm amniotic fluid and the sound of mom's
heartbeat and body. It is important for father to support their partner before, during and after
pregnancy. There are many things that he can do to make Mom’s pregnancy healthier and less
stressful. When the new baby arrives, there will be plenty to do and mom needs support.
Newborns, babies within their first month of life, are both a challenge and a joy to care for. As
new little humans, they are experiencing everything in their environment for the first time and
are completely dependent on their parents for everything they need. Taking the time to learn
about proper care for a newborn infant can make your baby happier and healthier during his first
week of life. Caring for one's baby might seem like the most natural thing on the earth, but
parenting an infant is a 24-hour-a-day job. After nine months of anticipation, many new parents
still have questions and concerns about the role they play in their child's life. In a few weeks,
baby, mom, and dad will settle into a routine, but knowing what to expect can make the
transition smoother.
Newborn babies are completely dependent on their parents. Caring for newborns includes
providing them with proper nutrition, a safe place to sleep as well as quality time and attention.
The first year of your baby’s life is a time of rapid growth and development. With the
appropriate care, your child is more likely to grow into a healthy and well-adjusted child.
Alternatively, without the proper care, your baby could be at risk for long-term illness and
stunted growth and development. The role of the father isextremely important in the care of new
born. Once, they become mentally adapted to the role of child care, they feel very satisfied that

A journal provides the impact of the gender revolution on traditional male roles using
impressionistic accounts and narratives; It describes several of the dilemmas facing father’s.
1. The conflict between being a good parent and providing economic support. 2. The tension
between contrasting demands of nurturing a family and nurturing a carrer.3.The sacrifice of
personal goals and freedom. It also provides impressionistic evidence for what numerous studies
have confirmed that men are avoiding house work while increasing their participating in child
care.
An observational research had been conducted on the father-child relationship. They note that
there have been very few studies of father-infant interactions in the home setting and that
observations of father-infant interaction in the home is crucial in identifying successful and
unsuccessful parental behaviors among fathers. The review also highlights assumptions fathers
hold about traditional paternal roles that serve to socialize children, especially boys, into gender
roles and identities. The author concludes that there are not biologically-determined sex
differences in the potential for parenting behavior, but some biological predispositions are
probably present. However, given the potential for the diversity of parental roles and the use of
technology, the socialization of boys and girls are not dependent upon these differences.
From conception babies form a lifelong bond with their mothers, however forming a bond of the
father takes effort and involvement with an infant on the father’s part. Sharing in the care of
infant with the mother is a proven way to build a special father child bond. Relieve mom and
give her some alone time by taking the baby for walks. This alone time allows the father to
bond with the baby. Help with the daily care of the baby by changing his diaper, dreesing and
bathing the baby. Through this ways father make a bond with newborn Involvement of baby’s

Many interviews with men tell that just as new babies reach out to their newworld, fathers
open up to their new child. Despite the stereotype of the dad who fumbles frantically with the
fragile newborn, new fathers are neither inept nor uninterested in neonatal interaction. They are

3. as engaged with their children as mothers are, attending to babies’ cues and responding
appropriately. Studies of Israeli fathers find that with an average of less than seven hours with
their infant, blindfolded fathers can identify their children by the feel of their hands.By
responding to their babies’ signals, fathers reinforce the newborns’ behavior and initiate the new
relationship.
NEED FOR THE STUDY
In olden days, everything is handled by the father, but now a days new father is expected to do
all the things like loving, caring, supporting and handling with nappies. The health and survival
of the new born baby depends upon the fathers’ knowledge and attitude of newborn care. So
father’s role is very important in the care of newborn. A newborn is an infant who is within
hours, days, or up to a few weeks from birth. In medical contexts, newborn or neonate (from
Latin, neonatus, and newborn) refers to an infant in the first 28 days after birth.[1] The term
"newborn" includes premature infants, post mature infants and full term newborns.
The vast majority of newborns enter the world healthy. But sometimes, infants develop
conditions that require medical tests and treatment. Newborns are particularly susceptible to
certain diseases, much more so than older neonates and adults. Their new immune systems aren't
adequately developed to fight the bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause these infections.
Even from birth neonates who have an involved father are more likely to be emotionally secure,
be confident to explore their surroundings and as they grow older, have better social connections
with peers. These neonates also are less likely to get in trouble at home, school or in the
neighborhood. Infants who receive high levels of affection from their fathers are more securely
attached that if they can explore their environment comfortably when a parent is nearby and can
readily accept comfort from their parent after a brief separation.
A study was conducted for caring for a newborn baby is a challenging task but also incredibly
rewarding even if you are nervous around other people’s neonates, it’s entirely different once
you have your own. While there is much to be said about caringfor a newborn baby, here are
the basic things you need to do as a new parent. Involved fathers bring positive benefits to their
neonates that no other person is as likely to bring. Fathers have a direct impact on the well being
of their neonates. It is important for professionals working with fathers- especially in the
difficult, emotionally, charged arena in which child protective services case workers operate to

4. have a working understanding of the literature that addresses this impact. Such knowledge will
help make the case for why the most effective CPS case plans will not involve fathers.
The way fathers play with their neonates also has an important impact on a child’s emotional and
social development. Fathers spend a much higher percentage of their one- on –one interaction
with infants and preschoolers in stimulating, playful activity than do fathers. From these
interactions neonates learn how to regulate their feelings and behaviors. The child needs fathers
as much as it needs. The father to needs you to take care of the baby so that father can help in
doing most of the things related to baby care. So fathers take the initiative so that fathers are
equal to fathers. Care of newborn include dry the baby, replace the wet towel, position the baby,
thermal control, cord care, rooming in, feeding, routine immunization.
A report regarding knowledge of the experience of parenthood is usually from a woman's
perspective. The resulting outcome is that knowledge about the experience of fatherhood has
been limited. Fathers are starting to change this situation by sharing their experience as is
evidenced by the overall response of 267 fathers to this study. This paper focuses on the
exploration of 22 men's feelings and beliefs about fatherhood; and their expectations and views
about parenting. The paper will also investigate how fathers' antenatal expectations matched the
reality of early family life including emotional well- being, attitudes to parenting, adjustment to
family life and sources of support. The quantitative and qualitative data of the 22 fathers who
responded to both the antenatal and postnatal questionnaires used within this paper are drawn
from a larger Queensland survey of women and men during the antenatal and postnatal period.
A study says the importance of fathers' participation for development of the child and the well-
being of the family is recognized from earlier research. In Sweden, legislation allows fathers to
share the parental leave equally with the father even so fathers only use a small of their paid
leave. The aim of the study was to explore experiences of the first year as a father.
A study conducted with a phenomenological life world approach was used. Ethical approval was
obtained. Ten men, recruited by a purposive sample, were interviewed 12-14 months after the
delivery of their first child. The data collection was performed during June and August 2020 in
the south-west area of Sweden. The essence of the experiences of the first year as father was to

happiness in the family and men experienced a deeper relationship to their partner.

overwhelmed', 'To master the new situation' and 'To get a new completeness in life'. To master
fatherhood maintenance of integrity and possibility to develop an independent relationship with

personnel of today must be aware of fathers' own needs and the impact gender aspects have on
their professional support
A study was conducted regarding Development of father-infant attachment in fathers of
preterm infants .To investigate the development of feelings of attachment between fathers and
their preterm infants and to identify factors that help or hinder this process. A longitudinal
descriptive design was used to obtain fathers' perceptions of their infants, feelings for their
infants, and other related factors. A convenience sample of 27 fathers of preterm infants was
recruited. The main outcome variable was the time at which fathers first held their infants.
The earlier fathers held their babies, the sooner they reported feelings of warmth and love for
them.
A study conducted regarding parental knowledge and confidence in newborn care among 113
newborns fathers. The result of this study was father’s means was 13.59 (SD= 5.32) and father’s
mean was 17.55(SD=3.72) there was meaning full difference in knowledge about newborn care
between father and father. There were meaningful differences in knowledge about newborn care
between father and father. The father knowledge was significant higher than the father
knowledge .there need to educate the fathers to enhance their knowledge about newborn care
more research is needed to study the relationship between parental knowledge and accuracy of
behavior regarding newborn care.
A study regarding value of fathers for themselves and their newborns. The paternal role has been
neglected in parenting research. The present study focused on the values of fathers of newborn.

6. Highest goal of fathers from both groups for themselves were economic, values for their
neonates were morally focused. Udaipur city father’s placed a higher value on a clean and
obedient child, whereas middle class placed a higher value on a loving and imaginative child.
When values of these fathers were compared with values of similar sample of fathers of
newborn, socioeconomic status remained an important predictor of values.Sex of parent was
significant in the Udaipur city sample as these fathers placed a higher valuation on goals
associated with autonomy than did Udaipur city fathers.
Now days the fathers involvement in newborn care is important according to our culture. Mother
are engaged in their job so fathers also have equal responsibility in the care of the child. For a
healthy baby both mother and fathers care is needed. In recent days the trend has drastically
changed in all strata where both mother and fathers work and nuclear families is on the rise.
Neonates are left uncared making the vulnerable to many problems. Indian society is known well
for women to play a major role in the care of the child and fathers take a back seat. Having this
as the center of interest the investigator took up this study.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives include obtaining answers to research questions or testing the research hypotheses
by conducting the study. The objectives not only include obtaining answers to research questions
but may also encompass broader aims as developing recommendations.
This chapter deals with objectives, operational definitions, variables, assumptions, scope of the
study and conceptual framework.

newborn in a selected hospital at Udaipur with a view to develop a health education module”.

7. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
 To assess the level of knowledge and attitude of the fathers regarding new born care

OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS
1. Assess: It refers to critical analysis and valuation or judgment of the status
where thefather’s knowledge and attitude on newborn care is estimated.
2. Knowledge: It is a familiarity with someone or something unknown which can
include the care of newborn among their father’s information, facts, description or skills
acquired through experience or education
3. Practice: It refers to the method of learning by repetition or doing in
regard tonewborn care by the fathers.
4. Attitude: It is a hypothetical construct that represents an individual degree of like
ordislike for care of newborn among the fathers.
5. New born or neonate: It specifically pertains to a baby under one month old.
6. Father: He is a male counterpart for any type of offspring.
Variables
Variables are an attribute of a person or objects that varies. Variables are often
inherent characteristics of research subjects. There are two types of variables: dependent and
independent variables. Dependent variable and independent variables are used to indicate
the direction of influence rather than casual link. The independent variable is the variable
that is believed to cause or influence the dependent variable. Dependent variable is the
response, behavior or outcome that is predicted. In this study the variables are as follows:

Delimitation of the study
The study was limited to the fathers:
a. Neonates who are admitted to the PACIFIC hospital Udaipur.
b. Neonates within the age group of one month.
c. Neonates those who are admitted for more than 3 days.

 The findings of the study would reveal the existing knowledge of fathers
regarding newborn care.
Theoretical frame work for study
The conceptual framework for the study is based on health belief model. Health
beliefs are person’s ideas and attitude about health and newborn care. They may be based
on factual information or wrong information. The health behavior usually results from
health beliefs.
Rosenstock’s (2020) and Becker’s (2021) health belief model address the relationship
between a way of understanding and predicting how fathers will behave in relation to their
child’s health and how will they care neonates. Use of the model is based on a person’s
perception of susceptibility to a newborn care and the seriousness of the newborn care.
This model helps nurse, to understand various attitudes and beliefs in order to plan the
effective care.
The investigator felt that Becker’s model was suitable as conceptual framework for
this study. Fathers’ knowledge on newborn care could be modified by health
education.
The model describes about 3 factors
1. Fathers’ perception: -
The individual perceptions are the primary motivational mechanisms for activities related
to health beliefs.
In this study fathers’ perceived knowledge on newborn care.

Demographic variables like Age, Education, Occupation, Family monthly per capita
income, Type of family, Religion, Marriage of parents, Years of marriage, Type of
delivery, congenital anomalies etc. and structured variables like knowledge of fathers on
newborn care influence the fathers’ perception. The fathers’ perception is also influenced
by cues to action like mass media, information from health professionals, self-
observations and information getting through health education module.
3.Likelihood of taking action: -
This part indicates fathers try to improve knowledge on newborn care and helps
the fathers to provide adequate care to their neonates. Fathers will have access to health
information through mass media, health personnel and from health education module.
Scope of the study
 The investigator would assess the knowledge on new born care among fathers of
neonates.
 Based on the information collected, the researcher would like to provide valuable
data to implement a health education session to provide more information
regarding knowledge on newborn care.
