Salvador de Madariaga was an influential early advocate for European integration who contributed ideas about creating a united Europe based on freedom of thought and respect for human beings. Some of Madariaga's key ideas included seeing Europe as an idea and civilization rather than just a geographic region, creating a shared European identity and consciousness among citizens, and establishing a united Europe as a new "homeland" that preserved national diversity. Madariaga participated in the founding of the College of Europe and advocated for a liberal, united Europe with free movement of people and independent international relations.

Industrialization and de-industrialization in Ferrolsenior.udc
Ferrol, Spain experienced significant industrialization in the 18th century with the establishment of shipbuilding yards and naval arsenals to support Spain's growing navy. This led to a boom in industrial activity and population growth in Ferrol. However, beginning in the 1970s, Ferrol underwent deindustrialization as the shipbuilding industry declined due to global competition and economic crisis. Many factories closed, unemployment increased enormously, and the population declined. While some alternative industries have developed, Ferrol still struggles with the legacy of deindustrialization and the loss of its industrial identity.
The document provides historical context on the development of European identity and the European Union. It discusses how various groups throughout history, including the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and others contributed to the exchange of skills and development of an emerging European identity among peoples inhabiting Europe. It then focuses on key events and institutions in the post-World War 2 period that laid the foundations for modern European integration, including Winston Churchill's 1946 call for a "United States of Europe", the Marshall Plan, NATO, the Treaty of Paris establishing the European Coal and Steel Community, and the 1957 Treaties of Rome establishing the European Economic Community and Euratom.
