EMTs Matt Brooks and Luis Garcia arrive on the scene of a motorcycle collision where the patient, a male in his 30s who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from his bike after striking a car. The patient is unresponsive with a compromised airway due to facial bleeding. Matt performs spinal stabilization and opens the airway with a jaw thrust, while Luis prepares to suction, finding bleeding from the nose and a head hematoma. The patient responds to pain with nonpurposeful movement and has rapid, deep breathing with a strong radial pulse of 60. This indicates signs of traumatic brain injury, and the EMTs need further assessment to determine treatment goals for minimizing secondary brain injury.
