The Pearl Harbor Naval Station in Hawaii was attacked by Japanese aircraft in two waves on December 7, 1941. Over 2,400 Americans were killed or wounded during the surprise attack that lasted just over two hours. Eight U.S. battleships were sunk or severely damaged, including the USS Arizona which lost 1,177 lives when a bomb penetrated its ammunition compartment. In response, President Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan, which was approved on December 8th, bringing the United States into World War II.
