On December 7, 1941, Japanese forces launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The attack killed over 2,400 Americans and destroyed or damaged numerous U.S. ships and military planes. The attack drew the United States into World War II and ended America's previous policy of isolationism.
