PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE
CONTRIBUTIONS OF PAKISTANI-KIWIS
There are an estimated 5,000 New Zealanders of Pakistani
descent who have called New Zealand their home.
These ‘Pakistani-Kiwis’, despite a small number, have
made significant contributions of Education, Government,
Utilities, Infrastructure, Information Technology and
Corporate sectors. Following are some of those
achievements.
DR ASHRAF CHOUDHARY
 Pakistani-New Zealand scientist in
agricultural engineering.
 New Zealand's first MP from South Asia and
Pakistan.
 Served on the Primary Production, Local
Government and Environment, and
Education and Science select committees.
 Received Queen's Service Order for
community work in 2001.
 As president of FIANZ he oversaw the first
annual halal meat contract with the New
Zealand Meat Producers Board in 1984
KHALID "BILLY" IBADULLA
 Played for Pakistan & Otago.
 In 1965 he represented Otago
against Pakistan 1965 took 4
wickets and scored 43 and 102
 Living in Dunedin and working as a
cricket coach.
 He has coached some of top Black
Caps, including Glenn Turner, Ken
Rutherford, Chris Cairns
 He umpired first-class cricket in
England in 1982 and 1983.
Mansoor Khawaja
 Mansoor was Chief Demographer at
Statistics New Zealand for many years.
 A founder member of New Zealand
Demographic Society in 1975
 Awarded Life membership of the Population
Association of New Zealand
 Won Royal Society Medal in 2002.
 He has contributed a great deal to
population studies in New Zealand, the
Population Association (formerly
Demographic Society) and mentoring of
young demographers.
PROF. HANIF QUAZI
 A portrait of M. Hanif Quazi (1967-72 BSc (Hons), MSc (Hons), PhD),
the Alumni International Medallist, 2009.
 Professor Quazi’s story encompasses highly significant scientific
contributions to plant science in New Zealand, where he worked for
many years after graduation from Lincoln and completion of a post-
doctoral fellowship in the United Kingdom, as well as in his home
country of Pakistan.
 Mohammad Hanif Quazi came to Lincoln College when he was awarded
a Commonwealth Research Fellowship and commenced PhD studies
 Hanif Quazi has made a major contribution to agricultural and plant
sciences in his home country. In his work can be seen the transfer of
many New Zealand-based technologies to the Pakistan context. These
range from specific plant science examples to models of social and
community services.
 Complementing his contributions to academia and the scientific
community, Hanif Quazi has used his experience and wisdom to
benefit poor farming communities in a number of ways using practical
‘Kiwi’ insight into problems to get results
Dr Khalid Sandhu
 Khalid and Razia Sandhu established the
Kilbirnie Medical Centre in 1976.
 They served the local community till their
retirement in 2010.
 One of the founding members of
Federation of Islamic Associations of New
Zealand.
 Long service member of New Zealand
Interfaith Council
 In 2002, received Queen Service Order
medal from the Governor-General.
DR MANSOOR SHAFI
 Telecom Fellow (Wireless) with Spark,
where he advises on future directions of
wireless technologies and standards.
 Represents New Zealand in the World
Radio Conference and in meetings of
ITU and APT relating to wireless and
spectrum standards.
 Received the Insignia of a Member of
the New Zealand Order of Merit for
services to wireless communication
technologies
KASHIF SHUJA
 Squash player who represented both Pakistan &
New Zealand.
 Represented New Zealand;
 World Team 2005, 2007 & 2009, World Doubles 2006
 New Zealand National Champion
 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009
 Coaching Highlights
 Squash Central High Performance Coach
 Squash New Zealand High Performance Manager
 Coached Central Women to two National titles
 New Zealand men’s team coach for World Championships
 High Performance Coordinator Massey Academy of Sport.
DR MOHAMMAD ZAMAN
 He is a Technical Officer Joint FAO/IAEA Programme
Nuclear Technologies in Food and Agriculture.
 Helping NZ farmers in the environmentally
sustainable use of nitrogen fertilisers on New Zealand
farms.
 Developing a climate smart improved soil and water
management practices for:
 Sustainable intensification of agricultural production systems
 Mitigation of greenhouse gases
 Improving fertilizer use efficiency through novel technology
 Building soil resilience to minimize land degradation and soil
erosion, soil salinity and water logging.
WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY
CANTERBURY EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
 In response to generous support from
New Zealanders for floods in Pakistan,
the Pakistani-Kiwis in Wellington
organised 600+ relief packages for
Canterbury Quake victims
 The packages contained non-perishable
food, toiletries, and other items in high
demand in the quake zone
 The packages were distributed by
Salvation Army
BLOOD BALTI IN AUCKLAND
 Billa Zubair, a Pakistani in Auckland
organises ‘Blood Balti’ event every year
to encourage people to donate blood to
save lives
 Blood Donation Drive comes with a
Pakistani style BBQ, Music and Gup
Shup (chit-chat)
 First Blood Balti event made 9 blood
donations from Pakistanis and other
communities and today the donations
have reached close to 100
FIJI CYCLONE RELIEF
 Under the banner of Kiwi-Maddad,
Pakistani-Kiwi families contributed and
prepared relief packages for Fiji
Cyclone Relief
 The packages contained non-
perishable food, toiletries, and other
items in high demand in the quake
zone
EID GIFTS FOR SYRIAN REFUGEES
 In order to help alleviate refugees’
sufferings, Kiwi-Maddad is organising
Eid gifts for the new Syrian Refugees in
Wellington
 The gifts have been donated by several
families and were also collected
through donation drives in various
workplaces

Pakistani-Kiwis: Peaceful Co-Existence & Contributions

  • 2. There are an estimated 5,000 New Zealanders of Pakistani descent who have called New Zealand their home. These ‘Pakistani-Kiwis’, despite a small number, have made significant contributions of Education, Government, Utilities, Infrastructure, Information Technology and Corporate sectors. Following are some of those achievements.
  • 3. DR ASHRAF CHOUDHARY  Pakistani-New Zealand scientist in agricultural engineering.  New Zealand's first MP from South Asia and Pakistan.  Served on the Primary Production, Local Government and Environment, and Education and Science select committees.  Received Queen's Service Order for community work in 2001.  As president of FIANZ he oversaw the first annual halal meat contract with the New Zealand Meat Producers Board in 1984
  • 4. KHALID "BILLY" IBADULLA  Played for Pakistan & Otago.  In 1965 he represented Otago against Pakistan 1965 took 4 wickets and scored 43 and 102  Living in Dunedin and working as a cricket coach.  He has coached some of top Black Caps, including Glenn Turner, Ken Rutherford, Chris Cairns  He umpired first-class cricket in England in 1982 and 1983.

Mansoor Khawaja  Mansoor was Chief Demographer at Statistics New Zealand for many years.  A founder member of New Zealand Demographic Society in 1975  Awarded Life membership of the Population Association of New Zealand  Won Royal Society Medal in 2002.  He has contributed a great deal to population studies in New Zealand, the Population Association (formerly Demographic Society) and mentoring of young demographers.
  • 6. PROF. HANIF QUAZI  A portrait of M. Hanif Quazi (1967-72 BSc (Hons), MSc (Hons), PhD), the Alumni International Medallist, 2009.  Professor Quazi’s story encompasses highly significant scientific contributions to plant science in New Zealand, where he worked for many years after graduation from Lincoln and completion of a post- doctoral fellowship in the United Kingdom, as well as in his home country of Pakistan.  Mohammad Hanif Quazi came to Lincoln College when he was awarded a Commonwealth Research Fellowship and commenced PhD studies  Hanif Quazi has made a major contribution to agricultural and plant sciences in his home country. In his work can be seen the transfer of many New Zealand-based technologies to the Pakistan context. These range from specific plant science examples to models of social and community services.  Complementing his contributions to academia and the scientific community, Hanif Quazi has used his experience and wisdom to benefit poor farming communities in a number of ways using practical ‘Kiwi’ insight into problems to get results
  • 7. Dr Khalid Sandhu  Khalid and Razia Sandhu established the Kilbirnie Medical Centre in 1976.  They served the local community till their retirement in 2010.  One of the founding members of Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand.  Long service member of New Zealand Interfaith Council  In 2002, received Queen Service Order medal from the Governor-General.

DR MANSOOR SHAFI  Telecom Fellow (Wireless) with Spark, where he advises on future directions of wireless technologies and standards.  Represents New Zealand in the World Radio Conference and in meetings of ITU and APT relating to wireless and spectrum standards.  Received the Insignia of a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to wireless communication technologies

KASHIF SHUJA  Squash player who represented both Pakistan & New Zealand.  Represented New Zealand;  World Team 2005, 2007 & 2009, World Doubles 2006  New Zealand National Champion  2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009  Coaching Highlights  Squash Central High Performance Coach  Squash New Zealand High Performance Manager  Coached Central Women to two National titles  New Zealand men’s team coach for World Championships  High Performance Coordinator Massey Academy of Sport.

DR MOHAMMAD ZAMAN  He is a Technical Officer Joint FAO/IAEA Programme Nuclear Technologies in Food and Agriculture.  Helping NZ farmers in the environmentally sustainable use of nitrogen fertilisers on New Zealand farms.  Developing a climate smart improved soil and water management practices for:  Sustainable intensification of agricultural production systems  Mitigation of greenhouse gases  Improving fertilizer use efficiency through novel technology  Building soil resilience to minimize land degradation and soil erosion, soil salinity and water logging.

CANTERBURY EARTHQUAKE RELIEF  In response to generous support from New Zealanders for floods in Pakistan, the Pakistani-Kiwis in Wellington organised 600+ relief packages for Canterbury Quake victims  The packages contained non-perishable food, toiletries, and other items in high demand in the quake zone  The packages were distributed by Salvation Army
  • 13. BLOOD BALTI IN AUCKLAND  Billa Zubair, a Pakistani in Auckland organises ‘Blood Balti’ event every year to encourage people to donate blood to save lives  Blood Donation Drive comes with a Pakistani style BBQ, Music and Gup Shup (chit-chat)  First Blood Balti event made 9 blood donations from Pakistanis and other communities and today the donations have reached close to 100
  • 14. FIJI CYCLONE RELIEF  Under the banner of Kiwi-Maddad, Pakistani-Kiwi families contributed and prepared relief packages for Fiji Cyclone Relief  The packages contained non- perishable food, toiletries, and other items in high demand in the quake zone

EID GIFTS FOR SYRIAN REFUGEES  In order to help alleviate refugees’ sufferings, Kiwi-Maddad is organising Eid gifts for the new Syrian Refugees in Wellington  The gifts have been donated by several families and were also collected through donation drives in various workplaces  If you want to contribute, please reach out to Jamil Khan (jamil.khan@clear.net.nz) by 10th September 2016
