Presentation given at 5th Waseda ELF International Workshop, Tokyo
The data from this study comes from a larger data set which was collected during a year-long phase of Exploratory Practice research into Japanese University students’ perceptions of English as an international language. The data presented here comes from a task in which non-English majors at a Japanese University (n=25) were asked to watch eight videos of different speakers of English, all of whom hailed from different cultural backgrounds and used different spoken varieties of English. The videos featured Singapore English, British and American varieties as well as varieties from so-called expanding circle contexts such as Austria, China, Japan and Korea.
Participants rated each speaker for ‘authenticity’ on a scale from 1 to 10 and were asked to write a short comment to explain their choice. The results reveal that students showed an engrained native-speakerism to the way they felt about other speakers’ varieties of English, which is why they reacted negatively to so-called ‘non-standard’ varieties, showing particular prejudice against other East Asian speakers. The reasons for and connotations of this finding will be discussed in this presentation.

This document provides an overview of a book titled "World English: A Study of its Development" by Janina Brutt-Griffler. The book examines how English has become a global language through the processes of language spread and language change. It argues that English owes its status as a world language not just to imperialism, but also to the agency of non-native English speaking communities in reshaping the language. The book aims to connect the study of how English spread with how it changed, in order to understand how post-colonial writers have made English their own. It proposes analyzing English's global development through the lens of "macroacquisition" by bilingual speech communities rather than through political or social frameworks.

Presentation given at 5th Waseda ELF International Workshop, Tokyo
The data from this study comes from a larger data set which was collected during a year-long phase of Exploratory Practice research into Japanese University students’ perceptions of English as an international language. The data presented here comes from a task in which non-English majors at a Japanese University (n=25) were asked to watch eight videos of different speakers of English, all of whom hailed from different cultural backgrounds and used different spoken varieties of English. The videos featured Singapore English, British and American varieties as well as varieties from so-called expanding circle contexts such as Austria, China, Japan and Korea.
Participants rated each speaker for ‘authenticity’ on a scale from 1 to 10 and were asked to write a short comment to explain their choice. The results reveal that students showed an engrained native-speakerism to the way they felt about other speakers’ varieties of English, which is why they reacted negatively to so-called ‘non-standard’ varieties, showing particular prejudice against other East Asian speakers. The reasons for and connotations of this finding will be discussed in this presentation.

- English has spread globally and is widely used internationally as a lingua franca. It has an estimated 2 billion speakers worldwide.
- Some view the global spread of English as linguistic imperialism that disadvantages other languages, while others see it as the natural result of English being in the right place at the right time historically.
- Models have been proposed to describe the different varieties of English used globally, including inner/outer/expanding circles and norms-providing/developing/dependent varieties, but these models have limitations and may be giving way to new conceptions like English as a lingua franca.

A wound is a break in the integrity of the skin or tissues, which may be associated with disruption of the structure and function.
Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions.
Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair
There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
Complications of wound healing like infection, hyperpigmentation of scar, contractures, and keloid formation.
