6. Care in the Workplace
“Health care professionals come to
work because they choose to care for
people who are experiencing great
vulnerability.”
7. Relationship-Based Care: A Model for
Transforming Practice
• Written and published
by Creative Health Care
Management
consultants
• Evolved from the work
of Marie Manthey
• A model that looks to
improve all areas of care
delivery by focusing on
relationships
8. The Relationships of RBC
• Focuses on three
1. Patients and families
2. Self
3. Those you work with
• Allows for an atmosphere where everyone - yourself,
staff and patients - are treated with kindness,
compassion and respect.
9. 1. Care Provider-Patient Relationship
• Care providers maintain
the patient as their
central focus
• Strive to understand
what is most important
to each particular
patient
• Unwavering respect and
personal concern
10. 2. Health Care Team Relationship
• Requires commitment from all
members of the organization
• Need to respect one another's
level of practice and input
• Work together to achieve a
common goal
11. 3. Relationship with Yourself
• Necessary in enhancing one's overall health
• Increases empathy for the emotions of others
• Allows growth as a productive member of the
organization
12. 3. Relationship with Yourself Cont’d.
• Two important aspects are self-knowing and self-
care
–Self-Knowing
•A clear understanding of one’s self allows for more positive care giving and
effective teamwork
–Self-Care
•One can manage stress, define needs and balance work demands
13. Role of Patient Care Technicians
• Very critical in meeting patient and family
needs
• Through interactions with PCTs, patients
experience a feeling of being cared for with
dignity
• Need to have strong communication with
nurses to ensure effective patient care
• This communication is a strong indicator of
the team’s cohesion
14. “It was only then that I realized, that had it not been for both Tina and
April and their calm assertive reassurance – the patient would not have
consented or cooperated and this "task" would not have been
accomplished during our shift as it took all three of us to be
successful. After discussing this with the patient’s husband he seemed
much more comfortable with the level of care that was provided to his
wife today.
I know that as a floor we are looking at timeliness, and at an hour of the
day where it may not have been ideal - I wanted to recognize the help that
my coworkers offered - not to me, or each other necessarily, but to our
patient Becky simply because it was the right thing to do.”
