Gustave Eiffel was a French civil engineer born in 1832. After graduating in 1855, he spent several years working on railway bridges in France before starting his own construction business in 1864 specializing in metal structures. Some of his notable projects included viaducts in Portugal and France as well as buildings like the Nice Observatory. His most famous achievement was designing and building the Eiffel Tower for the 1889 World's Fair in Paris, which became his most iconic structure and came to symbolize the modern industrial era. A photo shows a wax recreation of Eiffel in his office at the top of the tower with his daughter and Thomas Edison.
