MetLife agreed to pay at least $1.7 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging it misled customers between 1982 and 1997. The suit involved around 7 million current and former MetLife customers. The allegations included selling policies using cash from existing policies that customers could not ultimately afford ("churning") and misleading customers about returns on insurance policies marketed as investments. This chapter discusses the topic of sustainable development from various perspectives. It provides an overview of UN conferences on sustainability and introduces the concepts of sustainable development and environmental accounting. It then examines the growing environmental impact of human activities since the Industrial Revolution, including unsustainable practices in both developed and developing states that have led to issues like global deforestation, soil erosion, and pollution. The chapter also explores ideas for achieving more sustainable systems, such as reforming agriculture and energy use, and considers important geographic factors that must be addressed for successful sustainable development.

Globe net illegal deforestation is growing problem for climate - globe-netLisa Schmidt
Illegal deforestation accounts for 49% of recent tropical deforestation and is driven by foreign demand for agricultural commodities worth $61 billion annually. This illegal clearing of forests for agriculture emits 1.47 gigatons of carbon per year, equivalent to 25% of EU fossil fuel emissions. Brazil and Indonesia have high rates of illegal deforestation, mostly for cattle and palm oil plantations exporting commodities that end up in many consumer products. Curtailing this illegal trade is important to reduce deforestation and emissions.

The document discusses a study that tested for genetic tradeoffs between social immunity (hygienic behaviour) and individual innate immunity in honey bees (Apis mellifera). The study conducted two experiments: 1) It estimated the heritability of innate immune response in honey bee workers by genotyping workers from two colonies and measuring antimicrobial activity. 2) It examined whether workers from hygienic colonies have reduced innate immunity by measuring both traits across 30 colonies. The study found no significant influence of genotype on innate immunity or a negative correlation between hygienic behaviour and innate immunity. This indicates no genetic tradeoff between the two immune traits in honey bees.
