Dr. Mya Vaughn will present on "Transgender and Disabilities" at Paraquad on May 14th. The presentation will discuss appropriate transgender terminology and provide tips for service providers to create a safe space for transgender individuals with disabilities. Dr. Vaughn's research focuses on sexuality and disability and multicultural counseling issues. The event is part of Paraquad's Cultural Competency and Diversity Speakers Series to increase awareness of different identities and abilities in the community.

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: Dr. Vaughn’s most recent
published article,“Women with Disabilities Discuss Sexuality,”
includes the insights of participants who are transgender
women. Presently, Dr. Vaughn is writing a research proposal to interview transgender
individuals with disabilities regarding their sexual narratives.“Transgender and
Disabilities”will discuss appropriate transgender terminology and suggest tips for
service providers to provide a safe space for transgender individuals with disabilities.
Audience members will actively participate in the discussion.
DR. MYA VAUGHN is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Counseling at
Maryville University. She received a BS in Psychology from Southern Illinois University-
Edwardsville, an MS in Rehabilitation Counseling from Maryville University, and a Ph.D.
in Rehabilitation Counselor Education from Michigan State University. Her research
interests include sexuality and disability and multicultural counseling issues.
PARAQUAD is a St. Louis non-profit with a mission“to empower people with
disabilities to increase their independence through choice and opportunity.” The
Cultural Competency and Diversity Speakers Series will help to build staff and public
awareness of a wide range of the many different backgrounds, identities, and abilities
in our community.
