WHAT IS A PARAGRAPH?
A paragraph is a unit of writing in a larger body of work. The purpose of a paragraph is to express a
speaker’s thoughts on a particular point in a clear way that is unique and specific to that paragraph.
When a new idea is introduced, generally, a writer will introduce a new paragraph.
Paragraphs are useful for the writing of texts: a) Descriptive
b) Narrative
c) Argumentative
d) Expositive
Paragraphs are classified according to: a) Their location
b) Their content
c) Their logical structure
PARAGRAPHS ARE:
PARAGRAPHS ACCORDING TO THEIR CONTENT
- Argumentative Paragraph: Its purpose is to convince the reader of what is affirmed or denied.
- Conceptual Paragraph: It is very useful in technical and scientific writings, it specifies the meaning of
document terms.
- Chronological Paragraph: It is useful to indicate several events or actions in the time.
- Enumeration Paragraph: Contains enumerator phrases that guide the reader.
PARAGRAPHS ACCORDING THEIR CONTENT
- Descriptive Paragraph: Facilitates the description of objects, people and places in a logical order.
- Explanatory Paragraph: Allows to clarify or broadly develop a theme.
- Expository Paragraph: Its purpose, is to present the information organized.
- Narrative Paragraph: Allows to expose in a temporary order the actions of the writing.
PARAGRAPHS ACCORDING THEIR LOGICAL STRUCTURE
- Comparative Paragraph: Expresses similarities or differences between two objects or phenomena.
- Cause- Effect Paragraph: This paragraph allows to indicate in the first place the facts and soon the
consequences of the same ones.
- Approach and resolution of a problem paragraph: In its first part it exposes the problem to treat, in
the second part offers the solution to the problem.

- Sequence or process paragraph: Indicates a series of events or a specific process in a particular
order.
- Inductive Paragraph: They cite the main idea at the end of the text.
- Conclusion Paragraph: Allow you to close a topic or section.
