The Parable of the Lost Coin is a "parable on redemption" that Jesus tells when
the religious leaders and teachers accuse Him of welcoming sinners and eating
with them.
A woman had ten silver coins. She considered the coins very precious. (They
might have been a wedding gift from her groom. Besides their monetary value,
these coins held sentimental values like that of a wedding ring, and to lose one of
them would be extremely distressing.)
One day, she discovered that one of those coins she treasured was missing. She
became upset and very miserable. "Where could it be? Where had it been lost?"
she started asking herself.
She started looking for it right away, over, under, up and down, but she could not find her
lost coin anywhere. Then she got a broom and swept her whole home, but she could not
find her precious silver coin. She looked everywhere she had been that day outside her
home. She searched through all her cupboards and places where she stored things. She
looked in all baskets, jars, and everything in her home.
She was on her hands and knees and looked under every place a dropped coin could have jumped
into. She rolled up her mats, but the silver coin was not in sight. As night fell, she could not stop
searching as the very thought of having lost her coin brought grief to her. She lighted an oil lamp
and started searching inside her home again. Looking high and low and through the dark corners
of every room. Though the search seemed perpetual, she was determined to find the coin.
Just as she was losing hope of seeing her invaluable coin again, she spotted
something shining on the floor. It was the missing silver coin. "Hurray, There it
is!" she shouted, "the lost coin has been found." Her happiness knew no bounds
as her search, which earlier seemed futile, had now succeeded.
She could not hold back the joy within her. She rushed out to tell her friends and
neighbors the good news. "Let us celebrate," she said, "For, I have found the lost
coin." Everyone was happy and they all celebrated together. Jesus told this story to
show how much God longs to have a relationship with people who are far from him.
