The Parable of The Lost Coin
TALK AMONGST YOURSELVES
What was your reaction to the Royals celebration parade
last Tuesday? How do you think Mets fans felt if/when
they saw pics/footage of the parade?
REPENTANCE
For the Scribes and Pharisees:
Adopting their standards of purity and law observance
REPENTANCE
For the Scribes and Pharisees:
Adopting their standards of purity and law observance
For Jesus:
Turning from our own way of self-leadership and lordship
and following Him and His way
LUKE 15:1-3
Now the tax collectors and sinners were all
drawing near to hear Him. And the Pharisees
and the scribes grumbled, saying,
“This man receives sinners and eats with them.”
So He told them this parable…
…What woman, having ten silver coins,
if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp
and sweep the house and seek diligently
until she finds it?
LUKE 15:8-10
LUKE 15:8-10
And when she has found it, she calls
together her friends and neighbors,
saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found
the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you,
there is joy before the angels of God
over one sinner who repents.
WHAT DOES THIS TELL US ABOUT GOD?
1. God is identified in Scripture as our Father, but
He clearly isn’t afraid of – or offended by – being
thought of, or seen, in female/motherly terms either
DOMINUS FLEVIT (Jesus Wept)
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who
kill the prophets and stone
those sent to you, how often
I have longed to gather
your children together,
as a hen gathers her
chicks under her wings…”
(Luke 13:34)
WHAT DOES THIS TELL US ABOUT GOD?
1. God is identified in Scripture as our Father, but He
clearly isn’t afraid of – or offended by – being
thought of, or seen, in female/motherly terms either
2. God’s heart to actively seek out and save those who
are lost is revolutionary for Jewish religious teaching

3. God sees those who are lost as an absolute treasure,
and His community celebrates once they’re found
WHAT DOES THIS TELL US ABOUT US?
1. We have the opportunity to join Him in actively
seeking out those who have been separated from Him,
and to celebrating w/all of heaven when they’re found
- Someone who LIKES you
- Someone who WELCOMES you
- Someone who LISTENS to you
- Someone who OFFERS to SERVE you
LOOKING FOR A “PERSON OF PEACE”
WHAT DOES THIS TELL US ABOUT US?
1. We have the opportunity to join Him in actively
seeking out those who have been separated from Him,
and to celebrating w/all of heaven when they’re found
2. We can rest in the knowledge that God sees us as
His precious sheep, His valuable treasure, one that
He goes to all possible lengths to rescue
SOUL TRAINING EXERCISE
The life of following Jesus is essentially a life of
repentance: turning from our own ways to His ways…
With that in mind, pray this simple prayer this week:
“Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, please show me one area
of my life where I need to repent this week...”
