consider buying one for your dog.
Check your neighborhood pet store
for leash lights, blinking collars,
and reflective harnesses.

Safety at night
2. Tag Fido!
Your dogs can’t call you
once they get lost. Never
leave home without detailed
ID tag for your dog!
3. Follow the Light
Choose the more well-lit paths
puts you and your dogs within
hearing range of other human;
and avoids other dangerous
animals.
4. Hold the Phone!
Bring your cell phone, but keep
it in your pocket so you can pay
attention to your dog, other
pedestrians, and traffic signs.
Page 4
Safety at night
5. Turn off the Tunes
Be aware of your
surroundings: motorists,
bikers, joggers, other dogs and
animals…
6. A Trained Dog is a
Safe Dog!
A well-behaved dog lessens the
likelihood that he will pull you
both into oncoming traffic, run
after a squirrel, or challenge
another dog.
Make sure you, the human,
are properly outfitted
Page 5
Winter dog walking
Put a jacket on your dog –
especially important for
puppies, senior dogs, small
breeds and short-haired dogs.
Protect paws with dog
booties or pet-safe gels
Use a solid leash, not a
retractable one. Consider
using a jogger’s leash, which
stay hooked to you if you fall
and lose your grip
Use a secure, front-
clip harness to
prevent pulling
Make sure your dog’s
clothing stays dry
Avoid hazard like
frozen ponds – dog can
fall into freezing water!
Wash dog’s paws when you return
home so he can’t lick toxic chemicals
like ice melts and salts off his paws
What does the dog say?
Your dog is
continuously
stopping and
chewing the leash
I’m feeling ignored. I
need more attention
and love
Your dog sniffing
and approaching you
slowly as you yell at
him for running away
Don’t yell at me please.
I offer no harm
Urine marking is a
signal of stress
against other animals
This is my territory
– Stay away!
Your dog suddenly
goes still and shows
the white of his eyes
That person makes me
so mad, I could just
jump and give him a
bite if he comes near!
Page 6
What does the dog say?
Your dog stares at
somebody from the
corners of his eyes
over and over again
and then sniffs away
I’m both anxious and
interested in you. It’s so
confusing. Let me sniff
it over.
Page 7
Your dog lunges and
barks at other dogs
while leashed while
otherwise he is friendly
I’m feeling so restrained.
See how others are so free.
Please free me!!!
Your dog starts to chew
his leash seeing another
dog enjoying an activity
like a session of fetch
How exciting! Can I
have it too?
