1. PAST + PRESENT EXHIBIT: THE CIVIL WAR IN CANNON COUNTY. SPRING 2008, Freelance Designer
The Past + Present exhibit was displayed in the Cannon Cultural Museum for six months in 2008. The exhibit
included works from multiple artists and various artifacts that accumulate the history of Cannon County, Tennessee.
The portion of the exhibit that I was commissioned for discussed the successes of great strategists, relationships of
soldiers and civilians, and the effects of battles and skirmishes had on the residents of Cannon County.
The overall intent of the panel design was to engage the audience, present the information in a clear and interesting
way and simply avoid the overused visual cues associated with the civil war. One of the major challenges was the
format of the information provided and the freshly painted the wall color the panels would be presented on -
bright orange. The space, recently renovated, was modern and clean and with the low budgets of grants,
several concepts - such three dimensional elements, were eliminated.
The background imagery presented in all of the panels reflects panoramic photographs I took in Cannon County, I
layered these photos with both linen and muslin fabric, to call the presence of the current landscape of the area into
consideration as the past stories were reflected upon by the audience.
There was a total of 17 panels, 6 feet high by 4 feet wide.
