ark & Co Solicitors have successfully secured the acquittal of Kevan Thakrar. Our client is a serving prisoner having previously been convicted of triple murder in 2009.
Kevan Thakrar was charged with 2 counts of attempt murder and 3 counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. All allegations related to attacks on prison officers in HMP Frankland, Durham.
Giving evidence, Kevan Thakrar informed the jury that he suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder following an attack on him by officers within the prison system. His defence centred around the bullying and racism that he has sustained whilst in the prison system and that his actions were in self defence.
The Solicitor instructed, Marie Bourke, along with a dedicated defence team from Bark & Co, sought and succeeded in obtaining information which severely undermined the prosecution case and highlighted the torturous regime which is alive within the prison system. Great lengths were taken to secure evidence from legal professionals, professionals within the medical field, as well as serving prisoners.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

ABSTRAK Pendidikan keaksaraan sejauh ini belum mengintegrasi kegiatan pem-berantasan buta huruf dengan kecakapan hidupun tuk produktifitas ekonomi masya-rakat dan belum proporsional artinya bahwa kemampuan membaca, menulis, berhitung, mendengar dan berbicara (calistungderbi) masih sangat dominan dari pada porsi penumbuhan kecakapan hidup atau kete-rampilan. Kemampuan calistung derbi yang dimiliki WB belum dimanfaatkan sebagai sarana untuk meningkatkan kualitas dan taraf hidup WB. Strategi “PaKeT PIN BB” (PetaKonsep Tematik Pembuatan Ikan Asin dan Budidaya Bakau) dalam pembelajaran keaksaraan adalah sebuah strategi pem-belajaran menggunakan metode petakonseptematik untuk meningkatkan kompetensi calistung derbi WB. Kemampuan calistung-derbi yang dimiliki oleh WB dapat di- terapkan dalam pembelajaran keterampilan pembuatan ikan asin (pembelajaran calistung derbi terintegrasi dalam pem-belajaran keterampilan) sehingga WB tidak buta huruf kembali dan memiliki kete-rampilan untuk meningkatkan kualitas hidup dan taraf hidup mereka. Hasil dari implementasi pelaksanaan strategi “PaKeT PIN BB” adalah antusiasme WB mengikuti pembelajaran dan membuat peta konsep dengan bentuk yang variatif sesuai kreativitas masing-masing. Kemam-puan calistung derbi yang dimilikioleh WB dapat meningkatkan kualitas hidup mereka sehingga mereka dapat menyelesaikan ma-salah dalam hidupnya, seperti mengurus surat-surat penting, membuka rekening, menyaksikan tayangan TV dan lain-lain. Setelah mengikuti pembelajaran praktek-terampilan WB menguasai kecakapan hidup dalam membuat ikan asin dengan variasi bentuk dan rasa yang dapat dikembangkan untuk mendapat kanpenghasilan. Kendala yang dihadapi, masih ren- dahnya kesadaran warga masyarakat ten-tang pentingnya pendidikan, sehingga di-perlukan motivasi yang kuat agar WB mau mengikuti pembelajaran keaksaraan. Selain itu, waktu pembelajaran yang kurang efektif karena kesibukan WB mencari nafkah, serta belum tersedianya modal secara ber-kelanjutan untuk pengembangan kete-rampilan oleh WB. Tindak lanjut dilaksanakan dengan pendampingan dalam menerapkan kemampuan calistung derbi untuk menye-lesaikan masalah keberaksaraannya se-hingga WB tidak buta huruf kembali dan pe-manfaatan limbah ikan asin berupa kepala ikan dan duri ikan yang dapat diolah men-jadi pakan ikan dan pakanitik. Hal tersebut dapat dikembangkan menjadi usaha yang memberikan penghasilan tambahan bagi WB.Tindak lanjut konservasi dengan cara membudidayakan tanaman bakau yang berfungsi untuk mencegah abrasi.
