Overview of Developer Bootcamps

Dev Bootcamps are full-time coding schools that train students without programming skills over 6-16 weeks to become junior programmers. The bootcamps are free to attend, but students pay 18% of their first year salary up to $12-18k after graduating. Early bootcamps started in 2011 and focused on teaching Ruby on Rails, Node.js, front-end frameworks, CSS, testing, and interview skills over the first 6 weeks, with the second part focusing on personal and group projects to build skills and portfolios. In interviews, bootcamp graduates are prepared to discuss simple algorithms and databases, side projects, and frameworks but not more advanced computer science topics.

Students will leave this workshop the soft skills and the hard skills required to make meaningful contributions.

From Rails legacy to DDD - Pivorak, Lviv
Rails is optimised for the first weeks of development. At the later phases it's no longer the speed of adding new views and data that matters. It's often more about the different (and changing!) ways of using the data. The business logic gets more complicated.
DDD has answers to those problems. Detecting the bounded contexts is the crucial skill. Choose which parts of the app leave as CRUD and which could go into more of the tactical DDD.

Abstract: Integrated Development Environments are at the neuralgic centre of developer activities. For many of us it’s unconceivable to work in complex developments leveraging multiple heterogeneous tools for design, build and test activities without the IDE connecting them all.
IDEs are powerful tools, capable of handling many types of tasks. In many cases, IDEs are perceived as a commodity but this is a naïve approach that ignores the many brilliant features that IDEs can be used for: debugging, code generation, test automation, version control, quality assurance, task & issue management, etc.
During this talk, participants will get an overview of what IDEs mean today, for the newbie, the enterprise and the hard-core developer, will get introduced to key IDE features that every one of us should be using, and will participate on an open discussion about what next-generation IDEs should look like.

In conclusion, the tools helped but defining the right processes around testing and reviews was most important for quality improvements.
