Riga Castle is one of the finest medieval castles in Latvia, built between 1491-1515 on the foundations of an older castle. It has thick 3 meter walls enclosing a 53-57 meter square area and in 1988 the Latvian national flag was raised in the castle tower, signifying Latvia's independence movement. Since 1994 the castle has been the residence of the President of Latvia.
