India is the 7th largest country in the world located in South Asia. It has a population of over 1 billion people and has a diverse climate and terrain that includes mountains, deserts, and coastal plains. The majority of the population practices Hinduism but there are also significant populations of Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains. Hindi and English are the official languages although over 1,600 other languages are spoken. The economy is based around agriculture, software development, machinery, textiles, and other major industries. Transportation within India is primarily via railroads, roads, and an extensive merchant marine and air transport system.

6. PEOPLE Divided into the following ethnic groups . The Indo-Aryan who represent 72% of the population while the Dravidian account for 25% and the Mongoloid with others account for 3%. There are also three alien ethnic groups which include the Parsis, Jews and the Anglo-Indians of mixed European and Indian descent

7. RELIGIONS 83% of the population are Hindu, 11.4% are Muslim, 3% are Christian, 2% are Sikh 1% are Buddhist and .5% are Jain.

8. LANGUAGES: Official languages are Hindi and English. Hindi including its associated languages and dialects accounting for 84% of the population English is used for national, political and commerce purposes. Over 1,600 languages and dialects are spoken throughout India with over 15 constitutionally recognized.
