OT Protocols
collection of principles that may be followed by everyone who is
engaged to OT.
Day before surgery;
1. washing of instruments with a detergent
2. Drying of instruments.
3. packing of instruments (packing should be done so that no outer microorganisms enter into the packed
material).
4. sterilization of instruments.
5. After sterilization of instruments store them in a cabin that should also be sterilized by various chemicals
like aldehydes, carbolic acid, and even by radiation.
OT room preparation;
1. cleaning of OT including OT equipment, windows, trolleys, and even every single part of
OT i.e. dusting
2. inspecting and checking whether every piece of equipment and machinery of OT working properly and is
available for tomorrow’s surgery
Surgeons Preference Card;
• A surgeon’s preference card is something that a surgeon likes to use for next
OT case including which type of instrument he likes to use etc.
•Fumigation of OT;
we can fumigate OT with various chemicals
1. carbolic acid
2. hydrogen peroxide
3. sodium hypochlorite
4. Formaldehyde
5. oxidizing agents
Sealing of OT
• properly seal the OTthat it looks like vaccum i.e no any particle enter
into OT or come out from OT
• Use tapes for doors to seal the OT
Day of surgery
• reach the hospital 1 hour before the surgeon for pre-operative
preparations
• maintain environmental conditions of OT i.e temp 21-degree
centigrade to 25 humidity 20 percent to 60 percent
• take every accessory to OT that could be used for surgery from the
store after being sterilized yourself.
• Never enter into OT without being sterilized yourself.
• make the environment comfortable for the surgeon and patient
during surgery according to surgeon’s preference card.
