Open source and access management: the Swansea experience and the wider pote...
Swansea University uses a combination of open source and proprietary software for its library management and access systems. This includes Ex Libris software alongside open source discovery tools like VuFind and Xerxes. OpenAthens is used for authentication and single sign-on across systems. There is potential for more collaboration in Wales using open source consortial library management and discovery solutions as organizations merge and seek shared services.

Flows are configured in XML using the <flow> element and can include transformers, filters, routers, and message enrichers leveraging expressions. Private flows cannot be accessed from outside the JVM as they have no defined message source and are only used if referenced from another construct running in the same Mule instance.

The active piece, Pillage, leverages TCP injection to run arbitrary queries against a database without credentials or man in the middling. SQLViking was designed with extensibility in mind allowing the open source community to easily add support for new databases without needing to touch any of the actual logic of the tool itself via Python's abstract base classes.
This talk will cover how the tool works from a functional perspective as well as existing and future features. It will also discuss the root issue which allows this tool to work and how to protect yourself against such an attack.

Sql server update-lock
Update locks in SQL Server are used to prevent deadlocks that could occur when multiple transactions try to concurrently update the same resource. Without update locks, transactions would first acquire shared locks before updating data. However, this could lead to deadlocks if two transactions simultaneously tried to convert their shared locks to exclusive locks in order to perform an update. To avoid this, SQL Server uses update locks, which are incompatible with other locks and ensure that only one transaction can update a resource at a time by first acquiring an update lock before converting it to an exclusive lock.

These applications are used to support various types of police work with data from open, online sources and are built using Spring Boot, Angular 4, Spark, Kafka and Jenkins 2.
In this session, I'll share our experiences and real-world use cases for microservices. I’ll explain our architecture, why we chose it, which challenges we face and what this all brings us. I’ll show how 3 teams work together on one product, loosely based on the models used by Spotify and Netflix, and I’ll talk about how we apply the principles of DevOps and Continuous Delivery. I’ll show how we handle security, build pipelines, test automation, performance tests, automated deployments and monitoring.
You’ll leave this session with an understanding of how this approach enables us to have the agility of a startup within the large Police organisation.

Performance of Microservice Frameworks on different JVMs
A lot is happening in world of JVMs lately. Oracle changed its support policy roadmap for the Oracle JDK. GraalVM has been open sourced. AdoptOpenJDK provides binaries and is supported by (among others) Azul Systems, IBM and Microsoft. Large software vendors provide their own supported OpenJDK distributions such as Amazon (Coretto), RedHat and SAP. Next to OpenJDK there are also different JVM implementations such as Eclipse OpenJ9, Azul Systems Zing and GraalVM (which allows creation of native images). Other variables include different versions of the JDK used and whether you are running the JDK directly on the OS or within a container. Next to that, JVMs support different garbage collection algorithms which influence your application behavior. There are many options for running your Java application and choosing the right ones matters! Performance is often an important factor to take into consideration when choosing your JVM. How do the different JVMs compare with respect to performance when running different Microservice implementations? Does a specific framework provide best performance on a specific JVM implementation? I've performed elaborate measures of (among other things) start-up times, response times, CPU usage, memory usage, garbage collection behavior for these different JVMs with several different frameworks such as Reactive Spring Boot, regular Spring Boot, MicroProfile, Quarkus, Vert.x, Akka. During this presentation I will describe the test setup used and will show you some remarkable differences between the different JVM implementations and Microservice frameworks. Also differences between running a JAR or a native image are shown and the effects of running inside a container. This will help choosing the JVM with the right characteristics for your specific use-case!

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
