Amphotericin B is an orphan drug used to treat mucormycosis, or black fungus, an infection caused by mold that has emerged as a serious post-COVID complication in India. Mucormycosis mainly affects those with health problems or medications that weaken the immune system. Amphotericin B works by binding to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, forming pores that kill the fungus. It is the primary treatment for severe mucormycosis infections.
