Jack was a mischievous man who liked to trick people, including trapping the Devil in a tree by carving a cross in its trunk. When Jack died, he was denied entrance into heaven and hell due to his trickery. The Devil took pity on Jack and gave him an ember to light his way, which he carried inside a hollowed-out turnip. Jack became known as "Jack of the Lantern" as he walked the roads at night with his flaming turnip. Immigrants later began using pumpkins instead of turnips for Jack's lanterns in America.
