Thousands of orangutans are being poached from the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra and kept as illegal pets, while palm oil companies continue destroying their habitat. The orangutan population in Sumatra has declined from 12,000 in 1993 to only 6,500 currently. Conservation funds are working to address the problem, and individuals can help by avoiding paper and wood products from these regions, donating to conservation organizations, and limiting palm oil consumption.
