Plants need water to survive as they are mostly made of water, using it for photosynthesis and transporting water and nutrients throughout the plant. When water is lost from leaves, water tension increases and is transmitted through the plant's vascular system to the roots, causing water to be drawn from the soil into the roots. SmartVineyards offers a real-time soil moisture monitoring system that uses solar-powered sensors in a mesh network to automatically monitor soil tension, providing data through a web-based dashboard to help efficiently manage irrigation of vineyards over a growing season.
