The U.S.-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement would provide significant opportunities for the U.S. medical equipment sector by eliminating tariffs on nearly 98% of U.S. exports to Colombia immediately. Currently, Colombia's medical equipment tariffs average 7.6% but would be removed, saving U.S. firms over $40 million in duties from 2008-2010. However, the EU trade agreement with Colombia may provide them a future tariff advantage of up to 4.5% over U.S. exports if implemented first. The agreement aims to strengthen intellectual property protections and allow remanufactured good imports to Colombia.
