Four major bridges were built connecting Manhattan to other boroughs between 1903-1919: the Williamsburg Bridge (1903), Manhattan Bridge (1909), Queensboro Bridge (1909), and Hell Gate Bridge (1919). These bridges expanded transportation across the East River and helped connect Manhattan to the outer boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx as the city and region grew rapidly in the early 20th century.
