2. Motivation
• Many physics talks that have come to Jacksonville in the
past 4 years have been given by non-research scientists.
• These talks are given the title of a science talk but are
popular talks rather than research based
• They provide little scientific content
• Often given by popularly famous scientists rather than
scientists active in the scientific community.
3. Idea
• A annual physics talk to take place during the fall
• The topic would be chosen to be both popularly and

scientifically accepted
The speakers would come from universities across the
US
The talk would be research based
Research would be presented, but so would background
information
There would be pre-lecture material for those who felt
they needed to be “caught-up”
4. Intended Audience
We love having community events, and this what we want
from this event.
• High school students
• Teachers
• Community
• Scientific background is not necessary but will provide
deeper understanding.
5. Experience
• Dr. Markus Klute came from MIT to lecture on his
research at CERN, and the discovery of the boson last fall
(A Night of High Energy Physics).
• We feel we are best suited for this because we are
students, and can judge speakers based on their ability to
communicate their knowledge rather than their prestige
alone.
• We managed to gain community endorsements and
donations from CSX, Coastal Construction, and Rivercity
Security.
6. A Night of High Energy Physics
• Hosted on UNF’s campus in the SU auditorium
• Approximately 135 people in attendance
• Students, donors, and members of the community
• Dr. Markus Klute was the speaker
• Spoke with Melissa Ross on NPR

7. Dr. Markus Klute had audience members participate
for an explanation of the work he does at CERN looking
for “new science.” The participants “probed” the ball they
were given and then decided what they believed to be
in the balls.
